Yeah, I find it amazing that the boards are pointed almost straight down the face of the wave yet at times they are getting higher and higher on the face (going backwards up the wave).
I wonder what the fastest type of board would be in those conditions - super deep concave twin (I have no idea)? Of course, making the initial drop on something like that may not be feasible.
