I'll be interested to see what he has to say.
But I was around when the terminology changed. So I'll add something later.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

It changed, or at least, the term "surfers" came into vogue as part of the efforts of the sport to clean up its image.
Surfies, in the 60s weren't seen as the clean up standing members of the community your Dad (and mine) would have liked us to be.
Enter "surfers".
Same but different.

Pretty lightweight vague and nothing kinda response there Shaun. You've been banging on about this surfer vs Surfie thing for a while now like it's an actual "thing". So can you perhaps try explaining what it's all about.

Surfies comes from the days of Bodgies and Widgies.
It's a bit like complaining about being called a tradie, Brickie, Chippie or Sparkie.

Surfy / surfer same deal. Surfy is what people who don't surf call a surfer.
Biker and bikie however, have a genuine distinction.

I think what Shaun was trying to say was...

"Surfers" wear Lowes and Rivers brand clothing, drink instant coffee, only ride thrusters, listen to classic Aussie pub rock, and don't care about spelling mistakes.

While "Surfies" wear Patagonia, drink single origin espressos, ride assorted boards, listen to Jack Johnson, and tend to care more about spelling.

...that's where you were coming from, wasn't it Shaun

;)

I thought a surfer was someone who surfs and a surfie is someone who only surfs.
True surfies should have no regular employment and mainly rely on bludging, lying, stealing and drug commerce for their income.

oh, so that means Shaun is actually a 'surfie' then? and not a 'surfer' like he claims to be?

Have you ever noticed that jobs which require a Uni degree never get described using the 'ie' short treatment but trade jobs do

So it's lawyer not lawyie, architect not achie, accountant not accountie.

But it's brickie, tradie, sparkie etc. On planes it's pilot, but 'hostie'.

Surfies are therefore people without degrees, by definition lazy unintelligent layabouts

While surfers are hard working smart and employed.

I'm pretty sure there is no other logical conclusion
