What's your gripe with dominators? Not a fan?
I saw someone ripping on one in head and a half a few days ago. It was a 6'4

Just some smooth tape is probably the best option, then if ya wanta put a 5th fin in you can.
And consider the resellability.

Options for a 5th are a hatchet, its low area and doesn't produce too much drag.

A few years ago KS used a quad with nubster@ Tavarua,if remember correctly it got him first place.

3 fins on beachies, 4 fins racing down the line[/quotequote

Yes.I use that too....but in very weak waves I'll use a twin.

Just a huge fat egg. Haven't ridden one but.
They aren't that bad really. In my opinion they are only good for int/adv surfers that can surf them as short as they can be. Good boards for back footed surfers in beachies I reckon. Getting the right size is the trick.

At 80kg+/- 3kg, I've surfed the 6'2, 6'0 and 5'10 more recently.

The 6'2 was 38L big thick rails. Paddled great, but pretty hard to do anything that resembled a sharp turn. Although skill level was low while i surfed this one. While i owned this, I demo'd a 6'0 (35L) and had a great session on it on the right hander on the long reef bombie. Always planned on the the trade in but ended up just selling the 6'2 to a mate and getting customs from PCC.

Picked up a secondhand 5'10 (33.5L) recently and had a few surfs on it as a thruster. Had a few good waves on it, but never loved it. I think I needed to stuff around with the fins a little to get it right, but as it came with futures I didn't want to spend the cash on anymore fins as everything else I have is FCS. Shortly after buying it I found a 5'11 el fuego (32L) that turned out a better fit for me, so I flicked the dominator to a Chilean backpacker.

I think for my skill and weight the 5'8 (31L) would good, but someone would practically need to give me one before i went out of my way to surf one. I love my quiver right now.

1. 9'0 longboard
2. 7'7 PCC Midlength single
3. 6'8 PCC rounded pin single fin
4. 6'8 Miller Waterskate
5. 6'2 DHD Sweet spot 2.0
6. 6'1 PCC single fin
7. 6'0 PCC thruster FCS
8. 5'11 Firewire El Fuego
9. 5'9 Twin keel fish

As soon as I get my new board from Patto, it's photo time.

I had one. 6'6". Half talked into it by the guy at the surf shop. I was going to Bali. Said it would go great over there and I could surf it when I got back. Annoyingly there was a 7' carver fish lurking up the back in the second hand section that was cheap cause it had Speeed fins. Having since owned the same board it would have handled Hyatt Reef and decent sized Serengan way better than the Dominator. Only really went in fat mushy waves and I had other boards that handle that better.

The only board I've owned that would consistently spin out at the bottom of a backhand take off after you've landed the drop.

I've got a mate that had a 6'8... I looked at the tail and thought.... "there's no way I'd even f#@k that on the quiet" ;)

With an arse like that, you need way more fin than just a set of m7's. You'd need a 9" Greenough and maybe some GL's on the side to hold that tail in.

That's for sure. Really sharp edge on the tail going way straight and thick straight up.

Jim Banks on fin cluster preference:
"quad, don't ride thrusters anymore... too slow..."

No, they're for normal surfers, we've got a custom "Pensioner" model on file if I should need one

last boards? is he shutting shop? or are you talking about the "sale" at the moment, where it looks like he's doubled the price, then halved it, advertising it as a 50% off?

was AU$2,025
now ! AU$995

No, it's just a twin with a stabilizer.

The one that is by far the best though is the USA Byrne by Michael Baron, it's a 6'6 thruster fish. Super fast, super manoeuvreable.

The 6'6" fish looks nice. I had a 6'6" fishcuit. Crazy fat......but when it went it really went. Way too flat rocker to be an everyday ride. That's when I started looking for something the same size but with more versatility.

OK so there seems to be a number of shapers making 4+1 boards. Surf as a quad, single, thruster, 2+1 and so forth.
On face value this sounds appealing, ie, have the one board in the travel bag/car and muck around with the fins to suit the conditions.
Anyone got one? Thoughts?

I've got a quad that was retrofitted with a box.
Pretty much only surf it as a single.
