If you've got access to a 3D Printer......Thingiverse has some downloads for fin box covers. As well as fins and whole surfboards.

"With many boards coming with 5-4-3- fin options I've often thought about empty fin plugs / boxes and how they might disturb the flow of water across the most important part of the board, the tail.
(particularly the Future fin boxes. I surf my Dominator as a thruster most of the time so i have two vacant fin slots.)

I've used a hose to create a fast flow of water across the bottom of my board and have seen the disturbance to this flow when the water enters and exits the empty fin slots at speed.
The water will enter and exit at 90 degrees to the bottom of the board at certain flow speeds.
I am guessing that this disturbed water flow would be increased by a board traveling at speed across a wave face.
And that it could react in different ways at different speeds as the board manouvers thus creating random drag, and lift.

I'm thinking of cutting down an old set of fins to create an insert for the box that will finish flush with the bottom of the board.

Should i stop loosing sleep over this???
To be honest, with my standard of surfing and my age (60) this will never be a real problem for me.

well he could just go to a nearby surf shop and buy Futures' fin box inserts

or possibly just stop surfing altogether

I was thinking Nick could go either way on this one.

Just stick gaffer tape over the top.

I've often thought similar things about those people the use wingnuts or similar adjustable bolts on their longboard fins....

They go to all the fuss of paying top dollar for a fancy 10" volan fin and then go and stick a massive chuck of metal either in front or behind it....

I'm coming to conclusion that most of all this shit is marketing and we should all just forget about it and just go surfing.

heres my actual tip! Don't do a five fin set up at all. Minimise the impact of boxes/plugs on your board's tail flexibility. Futures esp, they're a great system but you stick five of those boxes next to each other across 18" of the tail block and good night feel.

so like if it's a quad, get a quad set up, if it's a three fin, get a three fin set up, if it's a twin get two, etc.

I'm picking my new 6'0 up next week. Shortly after I'd ordered it i regretted ordering the 5 boxes. I've pretty much given up surfing quads around here in cronulla. Singles, twin+1, and thrusters seem to agree with me more. Besides, there's enough variation available with 3 boxes as it is...

Will be a long time before I get a new shorty anyway.
