Hard to know which one I'd chose for a surf, would need them all lined up in a shop like fashion and a detailed surf report to help me chose the right tool for the day.

I wonder when the last time that Bonzer saw salt water
Thought there would be a Drifta in there, probably under a flower bed of posies

Re: Quiver thread
I read about the MC Shiva model today actually, looks like the board you'd have if you were a fin nut and could only have one board.

Re: Quiver thread
One board I didn't list above is pretty interesting. It's an original Firewire - Bert Burger/Josh Dowling - from the first phase of FW, when they were sorta pre-launch. Has the full thick balsa perimeter stringer. 6'1" squashtail which tells you a bit about the time. I hardly ever ride it but the thing feels insane, super light, wonderful response from the balsa, and it's not burdened with that almost cement-like composite lamination they started doing pretty soon after Burger was "let go". I guess I have hung on to it because it represents a moment when the change from Clark Foam's feudal dominance of boardmaking to a much broader base of materials suddenly produced something really superior.
Re: Quiver thread
I had three of Bert's boards when he was making them in Mandurah in the late 90s.
They were astoundingly light and strong, but they were $1000 a pop, and in the end there was a one year wait, so I went to Surftechs which were around $600 and already in stock.
I had been riding Randy French's sandwich windsurf wave boards (under the Seatrend label) for at least 5 years before that and had been eagerly awaiting surfboards in the same construction.
So my history of riding composite surfboards goes back about 30 years and that's a lot of satisfied riding well before the the sudden and absurd trashing of the surftech brand became a popular pastime.

Not to me, I'd adjusted to the stiffness 20 years before without even noticing it was an issue, and all my wave sailing boards had been made in the Cobra factory since about 1985.steve shearer wrote:Sudden and absurd?

It took about 2 years for the WA wave sailors to change from riding 95% poly to 95% epoxy. I was one of the last hold outs, but as everyone said at the time, once you ride an epoxy you'll never ride a poly again, and this despite the epoxies being more than double the price

Re: Quiver thread
wave sailing is different to surfing.
What I meant though is that Surftech was well tested by the market, well supported by the surf media (maybe that was just the ad dollars talking) and had a pretty wide uptake.
So there was no sudden and absurd trashing of Surftech.
The product was only gradually rejected by the market as people became aware of the limitations and weighed those up against the existing alternatives. It was an entirely rational process.

Re: Quiver thread
Thats a most rational and sane viewpoint, most people (including you most of the time) display a visceral, emotional and irrational hatred for surftechs and all who own them.steve shearer wrote:wave sailing is different to surfing.

I find that attitude most alarming - especially given that the construction and country of manufacture is the same as tens of thousands of poly boards - and I have commented before that that attitude shares common ground with similar irrational prejudices based on racial, religious and sexual preferences

Re: Quiver thread
That was not a straw man argument.
You and the other surftech haters are the ones with a problem, not me.
To me they are just surfboards with advantages and disadvantages just like any other surfboard, they don't embody any meaning

You just directly equated people dissing surftechs with racism, sexism and (maybe) islamophobia.Cranked wrote:That was not a straw man argument.
I'd say your safely in strawman territory there or some other bizarre parallel universe.

Re: Quiver thread
i don't hate them. i just think the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. durability is their best attribute, performance the least. they're simply too reactive to suit a broad range of wave and surf conditions. small-mid sized lower energy wave they're ok providing it's clean conditions (no chopped or ribbed up faces) and no stiff offshore breezes or much wind at all really. in bigger conditions, they're too erratic.Cranked wrote:you and the other surftech haters are the ones with a problem, not me.

i've still got one, will likely sell it, and will never own another.
and i could care less about the pop-out factor or un-coolness of surftech TL boards.

Ahem! "shares common ground" does not mean "directly equated".steve shearer wrote:You just directly equated people dissing surftechs with racism, sexism and (maybe) islamophobia.Cranked wrote:That was not a straw man argument.

As I said:
"I have commented before that that attitude shares common ground with similar irrational prejudices based on racial, religious and sexual preferences."
I do believe you do have an irrational prejudice in this regard, your dislike, even hatred, far exceeds what is justified by some small defects and/or the place of origin of a surfboard
