When did they stop pumping? The shark management program (SMP) commenced in 1937 and there was a marked reduction in shark attacks soon after.
A whole lot of men weren't swimming in the ocean from 1939-1945.

That's the problem with the data, there are so many factors that can't be controlled for.

I presume he means when they put the outfall 7 klms out to sea in the 80s.
no. two distinct events. abbatoir waste pumped off the cliffs into the ocean ceased with the closing of the Homebush abbatoir and sale yards in 1988. So, it never was sent into the 7km outfalls. little bay outlet was probably the worst. animals parts all over the place.

and despite the outfalls, raw sewage is still pumped directly off the cliffs into the ocean at diamond bay. but plans are afoot to end that.
Okay, so that happened in 1988 and the new outlet was completed in 1992. That’s a four year gap. Not really room for discrete assessment. I can tell you the North Bondi outlet had constant fish and seagulls hovering around it….and on occasion trawlers scooping up the poo gorged fish. Prime shark feeding conditions.

I’m not going to get too involved but Jeezuz fcuk it shits me when idiots say hundreds of thousands of sharks are killed every year.

The Asian predilection for shark fin soup has nowt to do with GWS multiplying at a great rate along the NSW east coast. And what happens when the hundreds (more than a thousand it may be by now) of 2-3m size so far caught get to 3-4m in a few years?

More than “investigatory bites” I’ll wager.

This is where Steve has seen an opening, Toots. Cornerthe shark netting monopoly and make bank on the lucrative Asian Shark Fin Market.

Sean Doherty’s article on Surfline today is a good read, it’s specifically about NSW shark mitigation

DPI on twitter say they have now tagged over 1000 GWS. 1 for roughly every 2km of the NSW coast.

Rare.

That was a most excellent find MM.

By the by humans aren't prey for great whites, they are too boney (cause bad digestion ppoblems) and have stuff all fat compared to whales and seals.

the only threat to surfing higher than the murderous sharks, are the fruity faction who measure waves by kilojoules.

Using linear measures to indicate the power of a wave is like using litres to measure the power of a motor vehicle.

Too variable as is wave height, kJ will be the same whether it's open ocean, or near shore when the wave starts to react to the changing depth.

A lot of the high energy waves go around the southern seas with a wave height of a couple of feet and a wave length of a around a hundred metres

Definitely a lot more accurate than some Swellnet Forecasts :-D-:

According to Dorsal there was a shark at Bondi this morning. Plenty of swimmers to choose from.
