50 people died of covid this week cranked and you didn’t give a fuck. Shame on you
This debate is going great. Now GST is going all Covid Ultra and Steve wants to expand shark nets so he can surf isolated spots.
Talk about a thought provoking article.

Crabmeat on possible 50 deaths a year without netting:
"and the highlighted bit is a wild bit of guessing, huh?"

My edit:
Nah, not a wild guess, I'd think it has about a 80% probability. But then again, once it 25 a year the number of ocean users might drop significantly.

lol based off what?

50 people saved per year from shark attacks in oz based on 90% probability

it's crazy talk, tbh

Well yeah.

But isn't life all about probabilities?

"The Australian Shark-Incident Database has recorded that between 1791 and April 2018 there were 237 fatal shark attacks in
Australia.

In the two years of 2020 and 2021 there were 11 fatal shark attacks in Australia."

So yeah, my estimates were excessive. But NSW probably has 50% of the Oz surfers so it may treble without netting, say 10 a year?

Does the Gold Coast have netting?

WA doesn't have netting, and no surfer has died in Indo from a shark attack so it's not going to change my surf habits.

Heuristics.
Steve obviously has his eye on branching out into the shark netting business. Possibly with a side hustle of exporting shark fins to Asia and other exotic marine animals. Dolphin and whale meat sells well in Japan and who doesn’t like turtle soup.

"i think it has 80% probability"

is a wild statement. in the space of 5 mins you reduced it to 80% probability, from 90%. with a little more research, you revised yet again.

you "think" or you know? bcos i think something different, and i would be amazed if nets prevent more than 2 deaths a year. but thousands of other marine life - some endangered - absolutely, 100% die in the same nets. globally shark deaths are such a small number of cause of deaths.

people guessing, is a dangerous and slipery slope, my friend.

I surf in the Red Triangle, where between 1/3 and 1/2 of Great White shark attacks have occurred.
https://www.fearbeneath.com/habitat/the-red-triangle/

People have definitely changed their behaviour, I don't surf alone and I have a trauma kit and emergency beacon in the car.

It's almost all marine sanctuary, but I haven't heard calls for buoys, nets or culls.

The inshore marine Environment is as much a human ecological habitat as it is a shark. Even moreso estuaries and rivers.

what's your point here steve? i'm struggling to follow (and nah, i didn't read the article, i feel like i've heard it before).

if sharks and their presence have upset you so much, you do have some choices here, mate.
  • move to a place like sydney or surfers paradise where there are nets for you to enjoy your inshore ocean activities. and in doing so, become everything you hate.

give up your activities due to fear and just exist.

or accept that death is as much a part of life as what living is, and no one escapes it, and keep doing what you do. ie living, not exisiting
but culling sharks or erecting nets so humans can play. it's an interesting pov from someone like you. by advocating for any action on sharks, you are becoming all the things you despise and hate about humans. you're just another rat in the maze at that point bruvs.

the thought of a long slow fight with cancer while it robs me of my dignity and faculties is much worse than surfing, and being taken by a shark. there's an enormous release and amount of freedom and an abundance of joy out there, once you accept that
I agree with you Crabmeat, entitlement runs deep through the human existence and its very hard to escape it. We just have to accept at what levels seem reasonable.

E.g. How many native animals die so the weed you consume and sell can be grown? Like what's the acceptable amount....??

Could it be that during the 17, 18, and 1900’s there were way more sharks around and therefore more attacks? Like their numbers hadn’t been decimated by man yet? And now, there’s only relatively small numbers and therefore less attacks?

Yeah, I know, but it's a hard one. We've had netting for so long that it's difficult to make any predictions for the future. It may take decades for the shark population to recover to its previous level. And great whites really don't like eating people anyway as the bone to fat ratio is just too high.

It's not about the change crabby, I've changed my tune as well.

It's about not being able to comprehend Steve's view when you held even more extreme views not too long ago.

lol ... not too long ago? broskis, that was longer than a decade, maybe a decade and a half ago. are you saying shearer is 15 years behind my own evolution and growth as a human?

steve is a romanticist about the old ways, simpler times, and the simplistic purity of life and nature. of which as a surfer sharks are a part of. he's anti establishment and abhors monkey's in the cube, rats in the maze and people living a shallow existence all for the man.

so absolutely, i cannot comprehend steve's take on sharks. i'm curious about if steve has ever reflected about any of this?

the king, tried to coax him into a little introspection here:
I’m sorry steve but aren’t you the bloke that wangs on constantly about the absolute purity of pristine wilderness? Surely shark nets are the oceanic equivalent of the Enclosure Act?

but steve after playing the man for a bit, curiously called a timeout and left.

for me none of this is personal. steve's like fam to me. a kindred even, so i'm wildly curious and eager to comprehend his view
