OK data nerds, the DPI has updated T&R numbers for July and August and it’s off to the races. 19 GWS tagged around Ballina and 34 tagged around Evans Head. Of the other ‘target species’, 4 Tigers and zero Bulls were tagged.

Clearly, a broad (maybe a bit lagged) correlation with whale migration.

Interestingly, outside the ‘target species’, grey nurse are the most prevalent (31 T&R over the so called trial period) showing population may be gradually returning to health.

The rise in grey nurse captures could be because of the change in gear and bait.
My understanding is they use mullet and circle hooks for the smart buoys, whereas some other operators use regular shark hooks and sometimes bait with shark.

But I agree there's probably been an increase in the grey nurse population.

I guess they've given up on False Bay in SA and have decided a tropical island holiday is in order

A petition is going around, wanting to change Great White to Average Caucasian.
It's Okay to Be White.
They are White Supremacists though.

Up in Bellingen the other day, we were swimming down next to the bridge (as you do), magical arvo, kids running around, some cold beers etc.

Got chatting to a local who said the day before she'd been about to jump into the water on the other side (deeper hole) when a 2m bull shark went cruising past. I thought they must come up that way but had always assumed they would have to be pretty small to get that far. Nope. That size will give you a nasty nip for sure.

Nick, just some anecdotal evidence from observing and surfing Ballina over the last 5 years.
Over the last 12-18 months there have been by far the most surfers surfing ballina compared to the 3.5-4 years before that.
More people have returned to paddling out in the dark, staying till dusk and surfing outerbanks that were completely empty over the attack cluster period.
There's no longer a 'surf in a group' mindset, so once the main spots get a crowd, people will look for the empty lineups and start filling them too.

While not in the same numbers as pre-attacks, more surfers have returned to paddling to Sth Wall instead of driving compared to a couple of years ago.

It feels like it kind of never happened, just been put in the back of peoples minds for a while.

See World War 2 and most other major atrocities etc, people tend to forget and revert to type.
