You and this guy both kinda dodged a bite eh?

"A recent encounter at Walker island only a few weeks ago was unusual and noteworthy because it is evident that the shark wanted to do more than just "check the diver out".

After speaking at length with the diver concerned, there are several important facts about the incident that are worth noting:

1. The shark was a 5 metre male Great White

2. The incident occurred near Walker Island at about 10.30am on Tuesday, 7th May, 2019.

3. The diver was working alone in about 14m depth when the GWS first buzzed him by swimming about 1 meter above him.

4. The diver first became aware of the GWS when he pushed himself and his bag of abs off the bottom and the shark "collided" with him from behind.

5. Following initial physical contact, the shark swam a few metres away and then charged the diver at great speed.

6. Instinctively, and with almost no time to react, the diver lay face down flat on the bottom and hung onto kelp to maintain his horizontal position and "low profile" on the bottom. The shark repeatedly "bumped" the diver from behind in what was most likely a series of attempts to bite the diver. After the GWS ceased "bumping " him, the diver was sure he had been bitten and felt behind his legs and torso to check - thankfully, there were no puncture wounds or open gashes.

7. The GWS circled back several times and "aggressively" swam very close to the diver. The diver lost his bearings and without realising, swam into deeper water looking for a gutter to lay in. When realising he was in about 18 metres, he stopped and tried to work out which way the shore was. He was approaching no decompression limits and was keen to head towards shallower water. Understandably, it took all of his will power not to make a dash for the surface.

8. Realising that something was amiss, the deckhand threw the dropline to the diver. Attached to the dropline was an underwater slate. The diver wrote a message on the slate and pulled the dropline signalling the deckhand to retrieve it. The message was for the deckhand to orient the vessel with its bow pointing to the nearest shoreline. In this manner, the diver was able to determine which way to swim.

9. The diver swam toward the shore and when in shallow water with the vessel directly above him, was able to swim the short distance from the bottom to the divers door on the vessel and quickly pull himself aboard.

Given the nature of the encounter, there is absolutely no doubt that the diver did an amazing job to keep himself "together" during this 20 minute ordeal of pure terror. By keeping a "cool head" and communicating with the deckhand, he was able to eventually return safely to his dive boat."

At the very least a new wetsuit.

Maybe Nick has one that'd fit?

Anyone else catching the shark behaviour on ABC RN at the moment?

Most excellent, but I've missed most of it.

Pretty active at the moment.
Spoke to the shark contractor - keen and competent surfer - he's not surfing because of the number of white sharks around.

In terms of drum lines ‘time in the water’, Forster/Tuncurry was top of the pops.

Tagging are now spiking up again. The correlation with whale migration would seem to be indisputable. That said some still hang around over summer.
