Thanks foamy, thats the best analysis of shark behaviour. We're still fcuked though.

From swellnet, George Greenough on sharks reducing dolphin populations and endangering humans on the NSW Nth coast.

Read it and not sure exactly what he’s getting at but if it’s what I think then it doesn’t make sense to me.

I think he's almost playing the morality card. Good idea.

Great whites are the unrepentant, non PC of the oceans. Not just anti social and next level racists (specists), they fcuking eat other species.

This sort of behaviour is completely unacceptable. Everyone, including great whites, should be vegan.

Hmmm. Is there the germ of an idea there?

It's worse, white sharks eat dolphins! And whales! They must be Japanese.

I used to get really annoyed at the premise of Kimba the White Lion when I was a kid. The idea that all the lions were going Vego was preposterous.

Lion King always seemed like a bit of a rip off of Kimba too.

Wild animals being virtue signalled BA. Weren't you reading Crankys post?

Well the study doesn’t say that. It says that the number of great whites caught in the Queensland shark control program has fallen by 92%, from .7 sharks per net per year to .05 sharks per net per year.
I haven't read the study but i don't get it. How do they reach that figure from that info? I get a 7.1% difference. Is there some other factor at play or is my math not right? The per year factor cancels as it's common, so it's .05 divided by .7 multiplied by 100 to get a percentage difference, per year. How does a 7.1% change in netted whites mean a 92% fall in numbers? Is it calculated as a cumulative percentage over a large number of years?

Your maths is wrong, duck.

Well, technically your maths is right, but you don't know how to work out percentage change.
You've worked out the new rate as a percentage of the old rate.

Percentage change is: (New-old)/old * 100

It's (0.70-0.05)/0.70*100 = 0.65/0.70*100

Closer to 93% than 92%, but Nick probably worked it out on an abacus so I'll cut him some slack.

It's easier to visualize if you use nice big round comfortable numbers:

Let's say it was 3 sharks to 2 per year.

(3-2)/3 * 100

1/3 * 100

.33 * 100

= 33%

And here’s what isn’t mentioned, that white sharks caught in the NSW system has increased by 2500% in the past three years, from an average on 6 to 150.

This because they added all the drumlines. So there’s a lil lesson in bs statistics.
