nahh, and I dont want to carry on about it, am just a casual observer, unattached to this community, though I would like to be...but I found your comments directed towards Steve during the shark debate...though begun in the cat and dog discussion...seriously distasteful, and on so many levels

The trouble with GPS tagging is that the GPS doesn't work underwater. So you only ping the shark when it surfaces. Sharks can go quite a long time without surfacing.

So while GPS tagging helps in the long term re identifying shark habits and so forth, it won't help you tell where the shark happens to be right at this moment, necessarily.

Nick makes a very good point. You can use hydroponic sensors, but the idea that there will be a close series of hydroponic sensors up the NSW coast with comprehensive inshore shark tagging is pretty unlikely.

My limited understanding of tracking fish (I refuse to say sha.. any more until all this blows over) is that radio signals do not travel through water, so GPS only works when the sha... fish surfaces, as Nick said. Sonar tags can only indicate where the fish has been if within a certain proximity to a sonar reciever on the ocean floor.

And yeah, be careful over in the is SS alright thread, I only just got outta there by the skin of my teeth. The shar...toothy fish are circling and there's blood in the water.

Do sharks grow a lot of tomatoes?

Acoustic tags work underwater.

Well those northern NSW sharks in the Byron hinterland sure seem to be growing something hydroponically or otherwise. Richest bunch of m******erf******rs without a job I've ever seen. Seems all the money comes from old 'family' connections. Northern Beaches and Melbourne are the alleged origins of said wealth for most of em.

I know we're in their domain, and they're magnificant creatures and all that, but rather than GPS tags could we attach explosives that would be detonated when the shark gets within range of some sort of under water transmitter?

well that gives rise to an awesome image doesn't it

a few people sitting around waiting for the odd 3' set out at one of the Ballina beachies.

suddenly: BOOM! A fishy suicide bomber in their midst

Admittedly it might be quite alarming if one goes off while you're in the water. You'd need to figure out what the detonation radius should be. You wouldn't want bits of shark meat raining down on beach goers.

throw in some potatos and the punters will get fish and chips as they sit. None of this ten deep queuing at the fish shop nonsense.

If we could somehow show sharks were responsible for Sydney house prices and also negative gearing I'm sure there'd be enough mongs enraged enough to swim out there and kill them with their bare hands.

haha. as if i'd hide behind an alias on the interwebs.

good place for shearer though ... beachgrit is the surfing equivalent of the telegraph and courier mail comments section when it comes to fear and loathing about sharks.
