Well reluctant until they have overwhelming evidence....which must be building up by now. Scientific Agencies are inherently cautious about reaching conclusions.

Just asked Dorsal again, their complete reply;
Yes we have but they aren't providing that information at the minute. They are introducing a new system soon that will have the tag numbers in there.

steve shearer wrote:I wonder why DPI refuses to release the info.......maybe because it would pour shitt on theories that these sharks aren't "territorial".
I mean if it was the same 4m white just hanging around and that was provable it would make it very easy for people to call for the removal of the problem shark.
Also if that shark did bite someone and DPI hadn't acted it would make an interesting legal or at least moral case.
With all this faulty science exposing itself here Shep, does it have you asking yourself any existential questions?
Like if science is so far off base from what you believe is really happening in the flesh in the water around you. Could they be wrong about their explanations pertaining to our creation over our evolution.
is there room in these scientific flaws to call into question the existence of Jesus?
Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?
White sharks are definitely not territorial, nor do they tend to have a tightly defined home range (their preferred prey tends to leave if a shark is hanging around), but do they hang around general areas for awhile (months) and repeatedly revisit specific sites during a period? Yep, tagging has shown that some do. If that was happening in Northern NSW, it would not be a shock to science.

So they hang around an area for months but they aren't territorial?
That's a mighty rubbery definition of territorial.

Let's call it functionally territorial then.

Yes....but has Braithy convinced you to reject science and see the light?

Territorial is when the animal has a specified territory which it has an urge to defend, particularly from its own species. Home range is where it stays in an area which it doesn't feel impelled to defend. Then there is site fidelity, where the animal keeps coming back to a particular site, usually for breeding.
White sharks are not territorial and, if they have a home range, it is 1000s of kms.
It would be a big surprise if a white shark took up long term residency at a particular spot.
But for some to hang around an area for a while and revisit particular spots, that's not inconsistent with a traveller. Some areas are known for it. Not Northern NSW so much, but time will tell.

So basically some may hang around and some may not.

Until now. They have probably been watching surf videos. Possibly Coastalwatch.

The Dad has written to Swellnet to defend the photo as a shark spotting as opposed to a person duck diving.

Yep, some sharks may hang around for a while and some may not, but more probably not in Nth NSW.

There's been some suggestion from Barry Bruce chief shark scientist from CSIRO that white sharks may exhibit some aggressive behaviors consistent with territoriality ......I'd say the jury is out.

He suggests this may account for some attacks.
