I don't think there will be any ocean water sports if that ever happens.

The populations of any sea creatures are just guessing....HUMANS do a census, but I bet none of us are game enough to deliver the forms to whitey!
Even if we got em the forms, they would need a hand filling them out....no problem for them...they can score a hand and a foot pretty easy.
Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?
If there was 30,000 apex predators imagine how many seals, dolphins, baby whales etc there must have been to sustain them.

exactly ... we'll never see those numbers again, there's not enough ocean life to sustain them.
and humans are like a low calorie snack which tastes like ass, to old whitey.

Well that means they would have to chomp up dozens of humans just to get the fat content they would get from a couple of plump tasty seals, let alone whales.

It's gonna be a massacre on the beaches.

Science says otherwise. From Prof Daryl McPhee's Global shark attack hotspots: Identifying
underlying factors behind increased
unprovoked shark bite incidence
"Australian waters have concurrently seen a steady and signifi-
cant rise in previously depleted megafauna populations that are
known to be preferred prey items of large sharks, such as white
sharks and tiger sharks. Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae)
populations on Australia's east coast have shown one of the highest
growth rates for any mammalian population (Bruce et al., 2014)
with an annual rate of increase of 10.6% from 1987 to 2004 (Noad,
2011), and New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) populations
have increased at a rate of 10e15% over the past 20 years (Campbell
et al., 2014). These populations have recovered from previous
overexploitation to a point where they are now thought to be
reaching their theoretical reproductive limit and maximum carrying
capacities (Bruce et al., 2014; Campbell et al., 2014)

And when you look at the 75% decrease in commercial fishing effort inshore in NSW, especially how that impacts the juvenile white sharks preferred prey species Australian salmon (arripis trutta) , which has huge biomass.........then you can see we have the perfect storm for a rapid recovery in white shark populations.

interesting.
in theory, we could resume commercial fishing for salmon, and feed our cats the very best, whilst reducing juvenile gws numbers.
everyone wins?

And eat the occasional hump back.

Just eyeballing the taggings and sightings (those documented anyway), its seem the GWS outnumbers tigers and bulls by very roughly 9 to 1.steve shearer wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2017 8:31 amAnd when you look at the 75% decrease in commercial fishing effort inshore in NSW, especially how that impacts the juvenile white sharks preferred prey species Australian salmon (arripis trutta) , which has huge biomass.........then you can see we have the perfect storm for a rapid recovery in white shark populations.
That rapid recovery is well in progress.

With luck I probably won't have any significant need to surf Australian waters again.

Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?
already have. nsw ocean haul fishery can take two hundred and twenty four tonnes of sambos annually, between barrenjoey headland in sydney and queensland border. coincidence or not but the huge schools of big fat sambos which were a feature of sydney harbour almost year round have been noticeably reduced since commercial fishing for them north of the city was reintroduced a few years ago. the sambos are caught for commercial trap fishing baits.crabmeat thompson wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2017 8:33 aminteresting.

as far as pre colonisation sharks attacks, some idea of just how many sharks were around then can be seen in the records of the first few decades of the poms colonising sydney. people were getting chomped all the time. plenty of graphic stories of people getting killed after simply falling off a boat as they swam to shore.
ps aussie salmon actually saved the sydney colony - whitey was starving to death, the rocky ground around the harbour wasn't producing enough food the fertile land around parramatta hadn't yet been cleared of pesky darkies and planted. this coincided with strangely poor fishing, or at least a lack of understanding of local fishery. then the colonists netted a massive school of sambos and feasted.

yeah, that renewal of the beach netting for sambos north of the harbour seemed to stop the big schools coming north to here........but still 224 tonnes is a drop in the bucket for that species.
Anyway, minus that food source there are still shiteloads of juvey/sub-adult whites here......I really would like to see stomach content analysis of what they are eating.

lets catch a few on the weekend and for scientific purposes, have a look at their contents?
sew them back and throw them back out there when our science is done. they'll be good as new, yeah? of course we will film the process and upload to facebook when we're done.
Re: Nth NSW sharks. Can they p!ss off already?
You don't have to do that. Just stick a freshwater hose or large PVC pipe down their mouth and they'll throw up.
