The inshore marine Environment is as much a human ecological habitat as it is a shark. Even moreso estuaries and rivers.

what's your point here steve? i'm struggling to follow (and nah, i didn't read the article, i feel like i've heard it before).


if sharks and their presence have upset you so much, you do have some choices here, mate.

• move to a place like sydney or surfers paradise where there are nets for you to enjoy your inshore ocean activities. and in doing so, become everything you hate.
  
  give up your activities due to fear and just exist.
  
  or accept that death is as much a part of life as what living is, and no one escapes it, and keep doing what you do. ie living, not exisiting

but culling sharks or erecting nets so humans can play. it's an interesting pov from someone like you. by advocating for any action on sharks, you are becoming all the things you despise and hate about humans. you're just another rat in the maze at that point bruvs.


the thought of a long slow fight with cancer while it robs me of my dignity and faculties is much worse than surfing, and being taken by a shark. there's an enormous release and amount of freedom and an abundance of joy out there, once you accept that

I've surfed some sketchy places in southern Tas without a shred of doubt nor fear, that i would now, 30 years on, seriously reconsider doing so.

Netting probably saves at least 50 lives a year in Australia. We've had it for so long that people forget the historic fatalities pre netting. And that was when the population was a fraction of what it is now and without the explosion in ocean usage with the advent of surfing.

Meanwhile millions of sharks die yearly from human predation. The few shark deaths from netting are a small price to pay.

But for me it's not the shark deaths I'm concerned about.

It's the dolphins, turtles etc.

if we removed netting it would 100% not change my habits. and if it changed other's ... i'd be cheering for less people in the water.


like trev said, its the indiscriminate nature of nets which is really on the nose. human entitlement at it's most outrageous, imo
