Offical Global Shark Attack File for John Ford.

"Jeffery Brackenrig, was holding a dive course at Julian Rocks when a Great White Shark attacked and killed Sydney diver John James Ford, who was on honeymoon with his new bride Deborah. When the shark was spotted in the water, students frantically clambered into the boat, as Mr Ford put himself between his wife and the shark to save her.

"Jeff was the type of bloke who worked on spontaneity more than anything else, so I think he was in there saving the woman before he thought about his own personal safety," one of Mr Brackenrig's best mates, Steve "Scotty" Scott said. "Everyone on the course was in the boat when Jeff jumped in to find the bloke, but unfortunately there was only pieces of him left."
In September 1995, Mr Brackenrig was awarded Australia's second highest bravery award, the Star of Courage, for his heroic act.

No formal inquest was held into the death of John Ford.
Coroner and clerk of the Byron Bay Local Court, Graham Flemming, closed the file on the horrific incident and said the town had experienced enough of the matter. “There is little to be gained by holding a formal inquest,” he said. “The last thing this town needs is another shark attack or the kind of attention a formal inquest into this death would cause.”

She said Ford protected her as a 16-foot-long great white shark lunged at them.

"He pushed me out of the way. It took his life instead of me," she said.

Earlier Deborah Ford and a priest held a memorial service on a boat where the tragedy happened off the resort town of Byron Bay, 400 miles north of Sydney.

She and three other divers were not harmed in the attack.

Police called in hunters to catch the shark after it escaped from fishermen who hooked it hours after the attack.

It dragged their small boat for miles and spat out a human torso as well as pieces of wet suit and a face mask before struggling free.

Fisherman Ron Boggis said the shark was the size of an automobile.

I think the posts on realsurf show that it's possible to embellish just about anything.

The fact a 16yo witness measured the dorsal fin in yards didn't ring any alarm bells?
Or the fact they used three size comparisons in a row?

It wouldn't stand up under cross examination, so don't try and give it more credence than it deserves.
It may well be the best data available but it's not unimpeachable.

I guess whether the dorsal fin was a metre high or 60 cms high is irrelevant to the point of whether the body was partially or fully consumed.

It's simply not relevant whether the size of the white that ate John Ford was 16ft or 14ft or 12ft.

But yeah, if the issue under cross examination was the exact size of the shark, it would not stand up.

if the issue is whether the eyewitnesses saw the person attacked/eaten by that shark then it would pass any reasonable standards of proof.

Missing limbs and half eaten human beings are hard to embellish.

Could you link to that study please?

Partial or whole consumption of white shark victims is very well documented in coroner's and official attack reports.

Read it a few years ago and haven't been able to find it again. It seemed very reputable when I read it.

you will see that in the vast majority of great white attacks the victim is not eaten. And it is only the adult great whites that prefer seals, whales etc. not the juveniles.

Yeah because white sharks go through development phases etc etc, they start out eating little rays and baitfish etc, and their jaws mineralise at around 12-15 years of age and they then begin to learn how to do what happened at Little Bay.

Ie a full on predation, a three metre plus white shark doing what they do, an ambush hit, they are protecting themselves while taking down prey, so they come up from underneath, invisible to prey, and try to hit them so hard they are incapacitated. Sometimes biting in the process. Then they come back and eat the prey, which is what just happened to that poor bastard Simon Nellist.

I can't believe the distancing language you're all placing on this, who fcuking cares who is right about what percentage of white shark attacks are predatory and what aren't? Nobody has any actual idea of that, not even shark experts are certain about it. Imagine the stuff the recovery teams saw.

What we all know for sure is that more and more people are being killed in white shark encounters in Australian waters. And most of them are surfers.

DEMAND that the people spending our taxpayers money on pretending to look after this situation actually do what they say they are doing.
