Over the decades I have read numerous times about the natural curiosity of great whites and their lack of fear - usually attributed to having very few natural predators - anything unusual, they just cruise on over and have a look, and maybe, a little taste.

I think Braithy might call that over-dramatic.
Lets have an adult, nuanced conversation Coops.
whites in the surf zone, esp the juvey/sub-adults we see up here seem to exhibit mostly v. curious behaviour to complete indifference towards humans.
there's now a ton of data from encounters, attacks and aerial surveillance footage to have a high degree of confidence in that statement.
they are not shy and timid.
You're also using the Trump logic for climate change denial. "Nah it was cold in my town, therefore its a hoax".
Your only proof for argument comes from attacks alone. Not the possible 100s of sharks that aren't pinged and don't attack and are essentially invisible to tracking methods. Is it not possible then that those sharks act in the way described above? And that confirmed observations from several locations across the globe.

or even 1000's...
i'm happy to be corrected on the next, as i haven't followed it very much...
confidence seemed to be returning in the water with the aerial tracking & warning system? there was evidence it was disrupting the white's behaviour and with the immediate warning they offered to people in the water, attack numbers were down. people were returning back to the water with confidence.
the gov could probably reduce & re-jig the corporate welfare in this country and free up the 3-5 mil (pocket change) needed for aerial support all year round? have a small tourism tariff where they make back the costs?
doesn't completely eliminate the threat, but lessens it significantly? is that an outcome which pleases people? or are they wanting more proactive and aggressive measures (cull)?
i've heard from actual scientists the drum lines are bad. caught sharks send out a distress signal, and more sharks flood into the area looking for a cheap feed. in areas where there are drums, shark activity actually increases.

Here's a bit more on great white behaviour from personal experience. I was the only one out at Avalon Point (Mandurah), a helicopter crew sighted a 3m white about 750m from me, within minutes it was 30m from me (heli observer statement), I just had enough time to get onto the shallow reef. The path it took was from deep water diagonally towards me, that is it was not following the edge of the coastal reef. It seems to have sensed me and was coming to check me out. Or maybe it was just random?

Here's another: a 5m one swam past me and two other surfers about 10m away. We never saw it. It ignored us.
In the newspaper today some eyewitnesses reckon they saw a 7m one yesterday
. Which makes it 2m bigger than the largest one tagged and about the same size as Jaws.

If I’ve learned anything from Realsurf is that there Is no 7 foot.
