Haven't been to Gnaraloo for about 6 years, but ususlly, from the cliff at Gnaraloo station I could see the spume, or breaching splashes, of around 20-30 whales at any one time. That goes on daily for at least a month.
I wonder how many GWS were tagging along?

Not just whales but Australian salmon. Massive increases since large scale commercial fishing for them stopped. Used to be rare for them to be found north of Sydney. They now move up to the Queensland border and beyond. And they are a major food source for juvenile and teenaged great whites before they start munching whales.
Re: Jeffreys Bay Pro 2015
Has to be something funky about the Ballina/Lennox/Byron stretch....... whales swim up and down the entire coast, plenty of surfer numbers elsewhere but still all these attacks isolated in a 50km stretch.
Could be;
1. Rivermouth
2. Most prominent pointy outy bit of coast so all sea beasts must swim in close proximity to shore
3. Phantom X factor regarding rise of shark overlords over human race, attacking Australia from the eastern front
4. Phantom X factor regarding Byron and Nth Coast going from a peaceful hippy tranquil to capitalistic den of hedonism and pseudo-organic lifestyle where profuse body hair and veganism has been replaced by over priced organic markets and schoolies weeks. Shark overlords seeking revenge.
I know a nice oldish lady who used to swim from the Cape to Julian Rocks and back once a week with a bunch of friends. She don't do it any more.

just give the observer bloke in the Westpac chopper a bag full of hand grenades to drop on the buggers.
then we tackle the shark problem.

thatta boy.
don't buy into this shark pandemonium. People in choppers and airplanes will always find sharks when they're looking for them.

I'm actually at a fair bit of peace with being part of the food chain, hopefully not too soon though.
Daughter asked me the other day if I'd like to be buried or cremated. I said cremated and when she asked why I said because I wanted my ashes scattered at Lennox point so the fish could feed on me.

When did the commercial salmon fishing stop bomboraa?
GWS don't breed quickly but they do grow fairly fast. I dissected the jaws of a 4.6m female, not sure how heavy it was but it broke the crane on the shark net boat and we had to get a tow truck to move it.
It was somewhere between 14 and 17 years old.

yeah ... if a white wants to eat, and it can take down a 300lb seal in a bite, it'd consume us no worries.

So, no shark repellents for you?steve shearer wrote:I'm actually at a fair bit of peace with being part of the food chain, hopefully not too soon though.

Have you seen anyone else use something to soothe the nerves when surfing in NNSW?

I haven't personally. Although starting to see lots of black and white striped boards.
I'd investigate shark repellents, whats out there Mr Mik?
