Europe surfboard quiver

Post by decorob » Sun May 03, 2015 12:30 pm

Hi

My cousin wants to know what 3 boards he should take to Europe. He is intermediate and going for 8 months travelling as far as he can and surfing as much of the time as possible. He has just sold his old 5'10 hypto krypto and looking for 3 new boards that can work for him in any conditions that Europe can throw at him. Except for anything over 8ft

Cheers

Give us a bit more info on your bro. What length restrictions is he likely to come across with regard to airlines.

Is there any particular reason he sold the 5'10?

Im 177cm tall and 77 kg average ability. If I was going into the unknown. The three boards I would take would be.

7'6 mid length/funboard - great for crowded beaches and breaks with lots of paddling involved. Or 6'8 Miller waterskate if I had to keep things shorter due to airlines.

6-4 shortboard For when the waves are good.

6' small wave board for when there is no crowds and/or heaps of duckdiving.

Have a fun trip.

To tell the truth eggs are one thing I avoid buying when I’m grocery shopping. So you may say I’m an intermittent egg buyer who usually lets someone else buy them.

The mere mention of the word europe and shearer turns into a derogatory c$n&. He cant help it..

No need to be derogatory but if he's intermediate and going to Europe he doesn't need a quiver.
Just rebuy a 5'10" Hypto and be done with it.

no way a kook needs to travel through Europe with three boards. And I mean kook in the post ironic sense of the word.

agree with shep ... when i travel and it's not a boat trip, i wanna take just one board and if i take two, its a backup for the first board.

hypto's fit the one-board quiver bill nicely. 1-6ft (8ft if you can rip), mush, top to bottom, beachies, points ... shoreys. you can surf anything on them. it's almost cheating.

I think the chap embarking on this journey should model his quiver based on the film "Surfing 50 States".
Get a board custom made for surfing down concrete stairs (actually take a spare. Those conditions can get rough), down cobblestone streets, rice fields, and my favourite "break" on that trip, surfing off a shed roof into a pile of leaves.
Conditions don't come more varied than that.

He only sold the hypto because he is 6'4 and had troubles with positioning on the board. What single board to suit all conditions then would you recommend?? He is basing himself around Cornwall.

Hybrid Fish Shortboard 5 plugs. 6'6 in length, maybe 6'8 at that height.

Cornwall.
Small most of the time.
Bigger usually comes with wind and cold.
Any kind of hypto type intermediate short board will do.
Not having a mal will severely limit enjoyment.
Buy them there.
I'd spend more on wetsuits.
Surf can get very good, but not really worth a specific surf trip, too infrequent, and it'll probably still be crowded...

base yourself in Cornwall, fine. But you'll find happier hunting grounds in north africa in winter...(much happier)
