Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
Any views on V bottoms in bigger waves? Gives a bit more rail to rail and gives a bit more time into faster waves maybe, but does it kill the drive to much? Combo with a double concave out the back could be a good combo maybe?
Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
Vee bottoms are great in big clean hollow stuff. During the late 80's thru early 2000's all my step ups and guns for the QLD point cyclone swells -all had vee bottoms with rounded pins or pintails, and curvy consistent rocker.
The vee bottom feels very neutral, centred, and predictable, and clean. A secure "no noise" type feel. It feels as though it's washing off excess speed and keeping you tight in and around the pocket and curved sections of the wave.
In clean grinding and walled up big stuff, vee bottoms are unreal. The board feels like it's surfing itself.
Down here though for big wave boards I prefer a concave bottom, with just a vee on entry and exit out the tail, along with a low rail profile and less rocker.
Reason I prefer concaves down here is the waves tend to be less perfect, and at times sketchy and layered. Raw and jumbled swells. And the concave helps give the board extra squirt and lift, helping you generate speed to deal with (escape) any random shit. The concave (along with a low rail) also gives a feeling of hard bite and grip through your turns.

Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
Thanks Hatchman. Good stuff. I am just riding a V bottom round tail quad with consistent rocker, have never tried before and what you say is on the money when comparing to my single to doubles concaves. I am really enjoying the waters interaction with the convex bottom in the run of swell we have just had and was interested to hear for larger surf again. Being a bit older and on the heavy side having a little time on faster bigger waves I am really enjoying the difference with the skin not peeling off my face at Mach 6, but it sucks puss 3ft down.

concaves better in clean hollow waves, vee bottoms better in bump.
well accepted.

Interesting article with the front foot surfing, Mark Richards swears front foot surfing is s myth but I agree with Rusty P here in my short experience for a V running down the board, so far for what it counts Im really enjoying it.

agreed . Vee bottoms feel like they cut thru bump well. They're a hot knife on butter feel. The black beauty I had til recent was a vee bottom and I've had it out in stormy eight foot plus and it felt great. Very clean amongst all the soup and lump.
But in straight line sprints trying to beat down a section on less than perfect wave, a single' concave feels (to me) like it's got more torque, quick 'get up and go!' than a vee bottom.

Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
Considering a clean day is the exception to the rule down here you'd think there would be a few more variations on V designs floating around even though it's about short sections 3ft average down here. Anyway back to Indo boards.
Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
Schapelle says any board is okay to take to Bali except a boogie board that weighs about 4kg more in the board bag than it did when you put it through the check in.

Check out 8 of 11 the Redo.
Love the shape. It's a bit more pinny in the tail than the 1970 I have. Looks a little narrower too. Stick a quad fin set up up over the top and I could be ready to rock and roll.

Well since NC has gone AWOL we don't have a resident channel fan.

Re: What boards DID you take to Indo?
I thought about a channel bottom quad from rabbidge with a fin box for more options. Mentioned it in another thread though.
