I agree. From memory they called the comp off for the day and came up with the excuse that after it turned perfect that there was too much logistically to call it back on. Massive failure from the organisers. And yes quite a few pros went out but if they are the best of the best they should’ve been competing in those conditions.

And while we’re at it the girls should have a contest at pipe too.

From one point of view you may as well include a Mal Session as a tow in one.

Yes it was a cheap shot. The surfers didn't make the decision to pull it. A number of them went out and surfed that afternoon. Nobody here was on the spot, watching the wind distort the lineup as it did in the hour before the event was pulled.

Friends of mine have died on days not totally dissimilar to that, I'll give people a break on it any day of the week.
Crikee Nick, get your hand off it pal. That Cloudbreak stuff up was a back yard circus.

The big wave boys had some clout, testosterone and corporate connection.
WSL made the wise market choice.

The person who gave them the most shit about calling it off was Mark Healey.
He kept calling BS on the claim they didn't run it because they didn't have the boards, he kept saying that the big wave guys said they could use theirs.

I'm actually glad they called it off, the wsl would've wasted most of the waves on safety surfing.

I do find it strange that so few of the top 44 actually wanted to be out there in giant perfect Cloudbreak.
It's well out of my league, I am not kidding myself there.

But if you told me a week out there was going to be 2m of fresh powder at the Swiss ski resort I was headed to, with dedicated avalanche rescue teams to follow me down every run, you better believe I'd be turning up with a powder board.

6-10ft Pipeline/Backdoor may be the most dangerous wave in the world, but the WSL guys surf it on pretty much the same board as they surf Snapper. That’s a lot different board to a 9 foot rhino chaser which many of the WSL chaps would never have ridden before and their surfboard shaper doesn’t even make.

Then there is the whole comp thing. A lot of the big wave daves are pretty selective which wave they catch on the mega days and are really looking for the one bomb and then they happily paddle in. Those are freedoms you don’t get in heat surfing.

In the morning, Kai Otten reckons he only got to the surface by climbing his legrope, something he had never had to do before. It would have been ridiculous running WSL heats at the height of the swell.

it was a black eye for pro surfing. guys getting paid millions to surf each year ... who peacock around the place like they're god's gift. but then pack their testicles away as soon as it's hairy?

then the wind swings, a bunch of guys who don't get anywhere near the realm as the puffed up peacocks go and put on a show for the ages. it's just more evidence surfing isn't a sport; it's a life pursuit.

... the final humiliation of "pro" surfing will be the olympics.

It won't be the final humiliation, surely there will be more but, surfing in the Olympics signals a big shift.
As I've said before, mainstream comp surfing will look more and more like gymnastics.

Shearer, enjoyed your Beach Grit article on Kidman and Franks latest offering. I like his stuff and enjoyed Derek H’s insights and surfing in the original. Some good local knowledge on the WA trip to boot.

You're essentially wearing salt-encrusted used condoms and you're surprised they don't smell great?
