All this Molokai malarkey.......do you bankroll this yourself Nick, is this a hobby?
Or is there some form of sponsorship......some kind of business case.

It can't be cheap in terms of time and money to do it every year.
I don't do it every year. There's no sponsorship. There's some backing and some rationale via my coaching role with the superclubbies, various of my squad have won the race at different times. Team's a bit less exy than solo because some of the costs are shared. To me it's an experience, I work for it, I store the experience away, I take notes and shit, everything I do and see and feel is grist for the mill at some point. This is probably the last one I'll do. You want to understand it, wait till I write about it. Or do it yourself.

I'll read your take.
I understand the once or twice thing, but multiple times is beyond my ken.

I mean from a writerly perspective what are you getting from this go around that you didn't mine the other times?

I actually wore a baseball cap with the bill turned backward, how about that?
Smart - more aerodynamic. You should shave your legs as well.

shit eh really?

I mean seriously it's beyond your ken?

I thought you were a student of masculine obsession what with all that Russian literature and so forth. There's people who've built their lives around this race. Why did Jamie Mitchell win it 10 times in a row, getting a little bit better each time? I dunno, I don't picture things like this as once or twice deals. They get in your blood, they feel incomplete until they suddenly feel complete.

I guess I used to struggle and fail to understand why people would just give up surfing. Most particularly people who continued to work in a surfing milieu. I once knew a surf photographer and formerly quite skilled surfer who had done that, given up surfing, barely took a surf photo, but kept a job in the field. We talked about it a bit and he explained it a bit vaguely, as if he wasn't quite sure of the reasons himself. His health had deteriorated. He was a lovely man but often seemed very sad without fully expressing it. I thought later, this was an act of self denial, that his idea of surfing and perhaps of himself had stalled somehow or become poisoned, and that he had made a not quite conscious choice.

Yeah, Steve's gone full retard here. He just surprised himself by enjoying the Tour de France. What, does he think those guys do it two or three times then pack it in?
I reckon he's not as ming mong as he looks, he's trolling you Nick.

Of course I was trolling Nick, but not maliciously.

and look what we got back from that bland, flat affect question (genuine curiosity btw): something quite profound!

I like to be wrong, I like to be surprised and have assumptions overturned.

I mean you think you know who you are and what you like and then ...boom!, not true.

Doing the Molokai would seem like a giant holiday for me. All that time training, all that time in pain where nothing else matters except getting through the next 5 minutes. Pain is a great anaesthetic from life when self inflicted.

I think the comedown from it would be very hard though. Mentally.

I know something very good is always going to spew forth from Nick's keyboard when he opens with a cheap shot.

Loof, I've been overboard in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, at night, having to swim for my life.

pretty sure I could put one arm in front of the other for however long it took with boats and people all around.

I'm sure Carroll would be on his third ice bath and mai tai by the time I got in, but I'd get there.

the only thing we both truly know in our heart of hearts is that I'd beat you Loof.

In fact, it's almost certain you wouldn't get out of the harbour.

No chance Steve, it has been proven on here time and time again I am physically stronger then you with way more stamina. You’re embarrassing yourself now.

They'd be lost at sea. There would be a huge search and rescue effort, but their bodies would never be found.

Realsurf pages would have black borders as a mark of respect

I never thought I would say this but is it possible Friday morning Loofy > Friday arvo Loofy?
