No. Italo and Medina are the ones really in the game. Filipe and Jordy also have a good shot, but need those two to fail. Kolohe's pretty unlikely. Nobody else is near enough.

Fascinatingly, Kelly will need better than 9th to end up above JJF. That's the only way he can qualify for the US Olympic team.

If JJF did make a comeback at Pipe and won the event he'd end up in the top five, after being injured half the year.

Italo's win in Portugal gives him an illusory lead in the race. Really he and Medina are locked. They've both got 17th throwaways to come. If they both make it to the 9th place round it's basically whoever does best after that.

Medina has the record at Pipe, way better than Italo. GM has 2,2,13,5,1 over five years, Italo has 13,13,5,13 over four years.

Italo also has no pattern of maintaining strong placings over a series of events, instead he tends to go up and down, up and down, and he's just gone 2,1 in Europe, which suggests his next result will kinda be a dud.

Not only that -- Gabriel rarely makes two dumb mistakes in a row. His priority error in Portugal was just that, a dumb mistake. For all the hot air blown around it, that's all it was.

There's a mythology around world title crunch events, but they do usually follow form. Dramatic but weirdly predictable in hindsight.

What I do definitely know is that there will be a HUGE NUMBER of Brazilians on the beach at Pipeline.

You can’t do too much with 10m. But it’s the beginning of the end.

Yep, rent your not very good egg shaped single fin, that misguided attempt you made a couple of years ago to tune in on the single fin “buzz”, to a Vanlyfe backpacker for $20 a day — and never see it again!
