I think we'd be better off awarding the RS Home Renovator of the Year.

I vote Loof.

I can't remember the last time I claimed a wave.....the only time I really like claiming is when I'm surfing hollow lefts with my brother and I get a good one and claim the fcuk out of it to try and rub it in.

Oh I don't know, Steve......Nicks got a valid point to make here I think.
William Finegan had a few good things about various styles of claiming in his book.
Nicks take is more subliminal though.

you reckon?

Iggy and Ringy are about the only people who actually post about surfing on RS.
The rest is home renovation, food and politics and faecal phenomena.
Carroll is trolling the wrong forum.

Steve, re:claiming, surfing in our ordinary way to absolute universal indifference out at our local break,

That seems a bit different to the pros in a comp.
It seems a bit different to surfing with just one other person at a famous wave with a crowd on the beach, including your friends and family, watching your every move with passionate intensity,
while being streamed in closeup by multiple cameras to many 1000's on the world wide web,
while being judged by 5 people with a subjective score sheet of 1 to 10 in front of them,
and being a professional athlete/entertainer with your career on the line,
It just seems very different.

And patting yourself on the back because you didn't raise your arms to the nobody caring seems a bit different to Parko signalling that was a good one after he got a perfect wave, in competition, and rode it the way we only do in our dreams.

I'm not dissing claiming Foamy, especially not pro surfing claiming. You got me mixed up with someone else there.

And I'm not sure there is absolute universal indifference outside pro surfing.

I've been thinking a bit about this lately: this kind of related (mis)conception that surfing is some kind of uniquely solo, selfish pursuit. The act of riding a wave might be an individual one with it's own subjective experience but the whole thing is incredibly communal.
Maybe not as much for people living in cities without a home break, but then they have RS which fulfils that need. A need, that if we are honest, is more fundamental that the actual act of wave-riding itself.

One of my boards is a 7'6 mini mal and has a picture of a hibiscus flower on it. And of my eight boards, only one is a high performance thruster, and three of them are single fins. I lost interest in the pro circuit around the time that Shane Powell was ranked #2.

So I'm really not too sure where I fit into all of this. Now that you mention it, I'm overcome with anxiety and have a huge identity crisis on hands. Can I be in the core club? Or should I become a hipster? Or should I get a pair of okanui boardshorts and be done with it.

Nick " Because it's wreckable, all right?"

The biggest and most brazen of all claims may well be the "no claim at all c!aim", no flicker of emotion, no body movement whatsoever, the ultimate claim would have been Lopez at Pipe.

Surely the ol' hands-clasped-nonchalantly-behind-the-back tube exit deserves a place in this discussion
