Kelly's old, not dumb.
He knows better than to equate his wavepool's perfectly controlled conditions to Snapper or any where else on any given day.
And I bet he learned something too. He's the kind of guy who pays attention to details.

imo slater has the look and feel of someone who is turning his uber competitiveness away from the world title, and into chasing dollars. wavepools, obscenely plain, yet obscurely overpriced clothing range, and now his board label.

steve shearer wrote:I was really thinking about that watching Slater at last years Snapper.

ie Was his wave pool going to give him some sort of edge. All those perfect right handers he'd been training on, was he going to unleash something new.

As it turned out, Snapper was high tide and kind of wobbly, flat faced and tricky and Slater, on a banana that probably went great at the Wavepool looked slow and out of sorts. Like, unable to adapt. Which is what the ocean demands: a constant real time adaption to changing phenomena.

In that sense, training in a wavepool, which would enhance repetition and predictability, might well be a liability and actually retard the skills needed to surf well in the ocean.
So less about practice and more about poor board choice.

well, it's about the right mental and physical space to perform optimally.

If you are training for something and the thing you are training for isn't the same thing you are wiring the wrong neurons together and that could be a disadvantage.

I think you're over-interpreting Steve. Slats didn't spend that much time practicing in his little wavepool gig. He's still got most of his hours in the oceans of the world.

I might be Offy.

But I think this automatic assumption people have that somehow the wavepool will be the perfect training ground that will see all this advancement in terms of performance and board design might not be true. Or as true to the extent that people think.

Surely it's the worst training ground to deal with a natural force. Ride a skateboard if you want predictability.

I just had the most insane little fun session in shoulder/head high racetrack peelers on my bonzer (mini-merk) so my biased answer is ; yes.

Just watched a bit of the Hurley Pro at Manly on the TV at work.

Can't imagine having to surf in crap like that to try and make it on the tour.

Do it..... The bonzers that is, may be not a CI bonzer tho. They re pretty pricey if u get a concave deck after 6 months. The ones shaped by Malcolm in sydney & glassed by rhino are solid. Maybe Anus Deel can make u one, be careful about giving him a deposit tho !?!

I have a Bonzer, they're like a thruster except they react slower.

If your trying to do meat and potatoes thruster surfing on a bonzer your missing the point I reckon.
Waves I rode this afternoon felt nothing like a thruster.
