For JJF types, pro surfing and a successful "free" surfing career are interdependent.

You can throw names like Mason Ho around but his success is minuscule compared to JJF, Medina, Fanning etc..

Let's not fool ourselves into thinking pro surfing isn't a catalyst for major surfing success.

I watched zero pool. I watched Space several times. So I'm definitely not the same people watching both.
Well you are one of around a million point two people who seem keen enough to stay in touch with surfing on a consistent basis worldwide. This based on regular viewership of the main surf forecast/news/vid/etc sites. So some people such as you will go one way, some will go the other, but the vast majority of those people are picking up on both to some extent.

Overall, nothing beats a world title or two in that regard. Everyone goes “Dane” but there are no Danes. There’s world champs in their mid to late 50s who are still making six figure incomes purely through ambassadorships etc. It just really adds to the respect available to the surfer, it can catalyse that as you so resinly put it.

True for your Mick fanning, medina, Hardman types.
I think jjf could be successful in the Dane category without comp, but having both will serve him even better.

The new JJF video is currently on 209k plays.
Vimeo count a play everytime the play button has been hit. There is no requirement to watch the video till completion, or even for 6 seconds for it to be counted as a play.
A lot of people will watch the video more than once, or watch it for a bit then maybe watch a bit more later. I don't reckon the 209k plays would be for over 100k people.

20% of surfers self report that they cannot or are weak swimmers in the surf. Must be a large foreign contingent I'm guessing or older surfers who don't live near the water who dabble now and again.

I wouldn't take it personally. Most foreigners don't have swimming drilled into them like Australians.

And besides I also mentioned another group of people. Not sure why you needed to be defensive.

I'm not being defensive Thud, just stating a fact. I think you are the defensive one...

It's like you have completely lost the ability to engage in the most basic of dialogue.

Excuse yet another post.

Rob Machado has lovely style. Is style underrated today?

Can you spot the odd thing in this clip?
