Re: Just general surfing stuff
well that's that then
From the WSL's Saquarema PR this morning:
Kelly Slater (USA), 11x WSL Champion, has withdrawn from the event due to a back injury. He has been replaced by Bino Lopes (BRA), second injury replacement from the 2016 QS rankings.
“I have been working through some injuries the past several seasons and, unfortunately, I need to take some time off to mend my body,” Slater said. “I won’t be in Rio and I don’t know how long I'll need. My lower back has been in constant pain for the last three years and although I’ve been able to fight through it with short stints of rehab, it hasn’t fixed the problem. If I don’t do this now, at some point, I’ll ruin my body. I’m spending the next five weeks rehabilitating with WSL Doctors in Australia and we’ll see how I feel after that. I’m hopeful that I will be in top form again this season at some point. Thanks everyone for the support.”

Saquarema gets good mate, you might be surprised
Re: Just general surfing stuff
so age is finally catching up with Kelly. probably clapped out L4/L5, L5/S1 joints like most blokes his age.
5 weeks isn't going to cure a back problem that's been nagging him 3yrs.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
I reckon the lesson is stance width, those modern low volume short boards have dictated wider and wider stance widths.JaM71 wrote:But he is the messiah brendo. So what's the lesson here? I was watching a video recently and the surfers heel centre to heel centre stance width, must have been 26'' or more, then there is that unnatural pressure on the inside of the right knee with the right leg now at a more acute angle.
Re: Just general surfing stuff
Now there is a thought Marvin, continually out of alignment with frequent bursts of pressure. MP Spoke about thrusters being bad for surfers backs due to the positioning of the fin cluster

Re: Just general surfing stuff
Adriano's stance was/is so wide it detracts from his rad surfing. But does anyone really care about style?
I've come to the conclusion (incorrectly no doubt) that a HPSB doesn't really work over say 32 litres max, Hybrids maybe at 36 litres max. Hence the HPSB is for light weight people and therefore heavier people say 80 kilos should leave the HPSB and more shortboardish hybrids in the rack.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
There's no theoretical upper limit for a high performance shortboard as far as weight goes. The limit is more on the ability and/or willingness of the rider. I've seen mega porkers absolutely rip on such craft. You just gotta know how to use your weight.
