The movie Church of the Open Sky is opening in Byron on the 26th May.
Re: Just general surfing stuff
Well of course it is. The epicenter of soulless sell out surfing/wannabe lifestyle. If Kim Jong Un gets his act together someone should send him the coordinates of the Johnson and Lawson street intersection to put into the missiles GPS.Davros wrote:The movie Church of the Open Sky is opening in Byron on the 26th May.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
pre-emotive review. A too-cool, flaky philosophical epic featuring strange surfcraft being ridden remarkably well by (predominantly) hairy men with the odd baldy thrown in for balance about how they simply can't exist without surfing amazing waves every day and how it has healed them and protects them from the savage internal struggle our minds go through on dat to day basis. Sound track by Jack Johnson and John Butler. Just saved you $20bucks. You can thank me later.

You forgot in the in water yoga poses and Beau Youngs pony tail.
Kidman must think "what did I fking start. It wasn't meant to be this way"

Re: Just general surfing stuff
I'm having to change surfing cars and a basic kook style question for all about carrying boards on a roof rack.
Currently I have side rails (rails that run from front to back; to which the roof racks (running across left to right) are attached). I use standard tie down straps running through the side rails and back over the board (pic 1 below)
However, my new car only has roof racks (running across) and no side rails (the racks are attached to a fixed point in the roof itself); so I can only tie the board with the strap running straight up and down (pic 2). I can use the tie down straps but its a bit of a pain because they are about 10m long.
So as I have to buy something new anyway, was wondering if anyone has recommendations as to what to go for? There are shorter tie down straps specifically for this purpose and probably that is the answer (eg pic 2 which is a kanu lock strap) but are there ones that are better than others?
And there are also fancier roof rack surfboard carriers from Thule etc- are they worth it (in terms of making things easier or whatever)?
Most of the time I'm not driving huge distances but can be on the highway at 100km/h so they need to be secure. Will carry no more than 2 boards at a time (in bags); not particularly worried about someone stealing the board off the roof. Just dont want to spend 10 minutes to load and unload every time.

Also you can cut the straps to length. Just don't buy expensive ones. They've got heavy grade Occy straps with plastic Moulded end covers these days.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
ummm fcuk did you know you can use one strap to secure a board
put board on racks
throw open end of strap across nose
reach under nose and get hold of open end
draw open end of strap back under both racks
toss open end over the board, thread under the rack and draw up the outside back up to the front rack. the strap should now be wrapped over the board at both racks.
secure open end of strap to clip end of strap.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
Doesn't the strap tend to flap at speed if you do that Nick?
Easier to get the straps shorter.
I've got three sets plus Occy straps.
Light short set that does two boards.
Longer set that does four...two on each side.
Super heavy duty surf company brand with neoprene covers for the buckles.

Won't flap if you twist the strap 180 degrees.Beanpole wrote:Doesn't the strap tend to flap at speed if you do that Nick?

You aren’t the room Yuke You are just a wonky cafe table with a missing rubber pad on the end of one leg.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

I just use ropes. Knotted loop at one end and run it around the board and back through the loop.Legion wrote:For extra Blokey-stuff points, use a length of rope and truckers knots.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
True, didn't know if that would work over a longer stretch though.
I have to at least put a couple of Occy straps around the mal cover for long trips to stop it flapping on the roof. Had one cover that was so floppy it had to be totally wrapped up in straps.
Just an Occy strap or two to go to the beach. That's why I don't ride the mal much. Couldn't be Buggered tying it on the roof. I just chuck the other boards in the car. A few young mal riding hipsters at Bondi don't know how lucky they are that I'm lazy.

You don't do that for an average surf though.Nick Carroll wrote:i have used this method with everything from single boards to board bags to racing boards and skis, it never fcuks up.Beanpole wrote:Doesn't the strap tend to flap at speed if you do that Nick?
