Re: Just general surfing stuff
In his book, McTavish presented himself in the 1960s as obsessive about improving surfboard design. He is hungrily talking to everybody, comparing ideas, surfing long sessions at lot of quality uncrowded points, testing, testing, and then back talking to everybody and comparing ideas about board design, showing what he was doing, using other's ideas, often picking up work at their board factories and learning. He doesn't present himself as designing in some bubble.
Gerry Lopez says he watched McTavish be the first person anybody had seen turn vertically up the face at Sunset. Lopez says the aspirations of the surfers in Hawaii changed at that point. That's a pretty decent independent accolade.
He is not Isaac Newton, but I think McTavish cops a bit too much crap sometimes.

Yeah....I've read that. It's a bit like the Geoff McCoy version of surfboard design....The Dick Brewer Version, The George Greenough Version. Basically all those guys reckoned they invented everything....to verging degrees....or did invent everything.saltman wrote:Go to the surfblanks website and have a read of midgets thoughts on Bob and his board making
Drouyns take was always a bit wider though because he wasn't a designer primarily. Then there was introducing surfing to China, man on man, Acting, cross dressing, etc. while still claiming he was responsible for the short board revolution. Now taking on Kelly.
Saw him surf Kirra one day when it was big and a bit crosschoppy. So it was shutting down in sections. He was doing big roller coasters. Pretty impressive.

by the way everyone, I ran into Eden Saul's Dad at the superclubbies
I think perhaps it is best if whoever threatened to smash Eden's windows never meets Eden's Dad. He's a big guy who despite being really nice, gentle etc, clearly knows how to hurt people if necessary. I think I would not cross him.

So you're not on board with Geoff McCoys designs since the early eighties then Brian?Brian Brainwave wrote: man those fat little pear shaped boards like the far right one there annoy me. all the planshape and volume in the tail.

Once you're up and riding you don't need the width and volume at the front of the board, its there for paddling power and catching waves, after that it just gets in the way.
The blue and red ones were mine, traded them yesterday. Not because they didn't go well, they did, really well, but catching waves on them was too difficult for an old fart like me, especially with heavy competition.
Traded them for a 6'5 with a wide, flat nose - great for catching waves, but as I said, otherwise its something that just gets in the way:
sorry about the size of the pic

PS: I didn't know that our Skipper had a deal with TSA for his own board design. A man of quiet achievements is skipper
