Re: Just general surfing stuff
very true, but wave pools are also a much bigger capital investment, with much higher risk.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
i think wavepools are going to be a hoax.
generating waves consistently without breaking down - every wave pool in the world has had this problem, and then doing it cost effectively with australian power prices.
seems like pie in the sky stuff right now. happy to eat my words if proven wrong. but for now, it's all CEO bluster in the boardroom, and nothing tangible on the ground.

it does seem truly astounding after all these years and all this recent hype we are no closer to a commercially successful wave pool.
You'd think the pricing would have to be spot on too....because who is going to pay top dollar for something they can get for free.
And what happens if they get a great season of surf and people stop using the wave pool?

i wrote this in reply to a comment of the website. no one has ever really told us how they would operate a wavepool, so we're all left to speculate.
One thing which has always baffled me about wavepools, is how do they figure out and limit who surfs what?!
Like if it’s a 10 wave pass for say $150. What if someone drops in on me? Is that one of my waves? What if I fall off on the first bottom turn, because I had to dodge someone paddling for the shoulder rather duckdiving out of my way?
Will they limit how many people can be in the water at any one time?
All these things are great levellers in the ocean, where peaks shift, take off spots expand and currents and rips move people out of place and you have your own set of landmarks to guide you, etc etc
Taking all that away, and simply having one take off area, with a bunch of people at all different levels around you, seems like the perfect recipe for wavepool rage.
Wavepool Rage™ coming to a pool near you.

How's that rise of the waves guy, brian?
He's posting (talking to himself) all over swellnet, CW, ASL, god knows where else.
When's he coming to real surf?

go surf snapper or the alley ... and you'll blow a stack of waves, because of people in the way.
Re: Just general surfing stuff
Wave pools will go the same way as indoor skiing. Remember those bristles? It's got all the hallmarks of a Channel 9, 20-1 fad show.

Snapper looks awful. The women are out there god bless them.
Can you surf anything you want? Someone should break out a fun fish for the hell of it.

Re: Just general surfing stuff
Had the day off.....and slipped out for an early afternoon surf after completing everything else I had to do. Not very crowded and some fun peaks. Nothing beats surfing when everyone else is working.....it's so peaceful.
