What criteria are we using?

Well if you don't mind me suggesting, I think it is really more about how hard core we come across here on RS.

It can have fcuk all to do with how good you are. Like who knows what really goes on? All we have to go on is the claiming, the surf checks, the stance one takes in the great wave height call dispute and other core moral questions, the board talk, the willingness to leap in with advice on any surf related matter, the mastery of surf talk in general...the vibe, if I may be so bold.

Well that puts me out of contention, not that I ever was, mind you

After at least 30 years riding only pupe I got my first Surftech, and have preferred them ever since (15 odd years). I usually have one or two pupe boards at any given time, but don't like the way they ride and paddle, so they don't stay in my quiver for very long.

Cranky definitely has done that.....for tuflites anyway.
You are dead right though on the vernacular side of things. Most people treat it as fun but one or two......hhhmmmmm..... ...treat it deadly seriously.

Nick, on reading this I experienced a vague disquiet that took some time to blossom fully into dismay.

On reflection it seems you too have been affected by this new post-truth era. Instead of recognising that there is an objective truth that should define the most hardcore surfer here on realsurf you dare to suggest that we should defer to "self claiming" as a measure. This is particularly galling for a site whose very name appeals to an objective reality, and it comes too from a practicing journalist whose job is to seek out the objective truth.

Its sad to see that the shock and awe of Trump's assault on truth has infected even these hallowed halls of Realsurf

Gumtree > eBay but have found putting on both isn't a bad idea. Have sold 4 boards in the last 4 months.

I gambol giddily to the beach barefooted Nick. That's pretty core huh? In the same shorts I've worn since Ala Moana captivated us surfies of old... i choose my stick thoughfully mostly, from a smorgasboard of equipment. But sometimes I just grab the first piece that speaks to me...to test my boandaries, to challenge my comfort zone.
Once I slung a ouiji board under arm as I raced out the gate sculling a Slater inspired super juice, two stepped a few hundred metres down the street, the anticipation of my daily communion with the briny playground filling my mind, only to realise my folly, as I was dead cert from the previous night's charts I'd cross refenced with those kept from decades ago that my local would be at least double overhead. About 4 to 6 huh? I'd have been underequipped hey?. Thats gotta be love.

More or less. I think its such a touchy subject that probably the best score you can hope for is a zero, getting minus points would be really easy though

I was seeing it as very much a plus. But the big points come from the disguised claim - the verbal version of Lopez's nose-wipe tube exit claim.

Like when people claim a session, you know, "I drove down the coast for two hours and just when I was about to turn back came across this sick 4' rip bowl, got it over the top of the tide with two others, we were swapping waves and laughing, I was stoked in the new triple twinzer, really felt good in the top turns and sliding cutties"

That shit is points worthy. The person is telling you, really, "I am core AF"
