I really hate those tight little turns they have to do in the pocket. So many times you see a great section or a hollow bit and they whack two turns in where one good move would have fitted the wave so much better.

Re: longboarding, yep same. I'm a short boarder but enjoying doing it (sort of doing it) and watching it. Caught a Joel Tudor free vid the Ducumenrty (?) yesterday....and enjoyed it.

Tricks get applause, style gets respect.

I was mesmerised by this. I watched it like 45 times.

The video of Harrison Roach in Morocco from a few months ago had some very refreshing, classic lines. He is mainly known as a longboarder but rides boards of a variety of length. In this film there is some beautiful long short board surfing. The clip starts with some Moroccan wisdom that is a bit over my head, but the surfing footage from about 1:20 to 3:25 is really nice. Good song too. The waves are the point waves you dream of riding.

yeah, i haven't watched an asp event all year. once it became the wsl it was always going to die for me. what caught me by surprise was just how quickly i lost interest in it. they just try to hard in their representation of it to replicate some fucked up cross between atp tennis and nfl gridiron... and the more they do that, the more they steer away from what makes surfing so special in the first place.

in brighter news, i have discovered i can watch hi-grade longboarding for hours. it's pure art and poetry.

Especially bigger hollow waves, but basically anyone who surfs a longboard well is worth watching.

the images of Terry Fitz fading and speed arcing at Jefferey's are etched into my mind

how about a short review?

The evening
About 40 blokes respectfully milling around what is like an old surf club. Except the walls are adorned by all sorts of significant surf craft and faded prints of times not quite lost to memory
Plastic chairs. Sausage sizzle beer and wine on the verandah surrounded by trees
Almost apologetically Andrew K took the microphone and gave The general run of would proceed - he would play a song then stop We could ask questions in between songs
Amazing voice he has and deserves to be heard more often
He admitted to nerves and seemed a little taken back by what could be described as the friendly reverence of the crowd
But added he was relieved that it wasn't a beer swilling squawking chatter of shambles that some of these things are
After a few songs and some pretty thoughtful discussion the movie was played.
I took a mate who has been constantly surfing Gold Coast points for the last 30 years. Bought up on a diet of mainstream performance surfing. He had never heard of the movies
He really liked the surfing and music

Props to AK and the way he treats surfing with such respect

Sounds really good. I am a fan of Kidman. Good bloke as well. Glass Love is a favourite and I have been listening to the sound track lately. The NZ movie footage a standout.

That was fantastic. I felt more involved than when watching HPSB surfing. I know some places in Indo with waves like that (but lefts). I've surfed a McCoy 8' single on them and I've been wanting to give my 7'10 Takayama Egg a workout in them too. But, I still think a high performance board is more fun to ride, and certainly easier to transport.

I just recalled that a longboarder congratulated me on my style on the McCoy. It was just that the board wouldn't let me do anything else

I like watching good HPS and longboarding and SUP riding etc. I still enjoy the WSL. On whatever craft, it is being in a good rhythm with a good wave that I enjoy. That's the dance.
