All been downhill since Battle of Britain though.

My mate liked that Nullagine pub.

He lived there for about 10 years, was accepted into the local tribe and given an aboriginal name.

One time we were talking and he was planning a trip near there prospecting but said he wouldn't be stopping in Nullagine. I asked why and he said he only had a day and the local aborigines would be insulted if he only stayed a day, it would have to be three days at a minimum, as there would be a corroboree and people would come in from all of the camps to celebrate.

My mate is remarkable at befriending everyone, high or low, or anything really.

that still sounds heavenly compared to the sullen grimness of the suburban English pub.

also, a bit cliche.

I'll put the infamous Animal bar in Karumba up as the roughest pub in Australia.

I fought six blokes there, shagged two Sheilas at once and had a great time.

I remember some wheelchair xylophonist getting all macho about how he liked to smash absolutely heaps of Weetbix before a hard day's roofing

Alternatively GodSave, what would be the best pub in your part of the world, or all of the UK?

Could it possibly compare to the Pacific at Yamba, Manly Wharf Bar, Left Bank in Perth or the local of Nick Carroll, the Newport Arms?

I think the British bourgeois pub is a thing of beauty

But it's not the Newport Arms when Tim Bristow held sway.

Our pubs come in so many different forms, of course. There’s the flat-roofed, centre of the council estate ones (terrifying), the urban drinking man’s ones (so many unknowable hierarchies! So alarming for the wide eyed colonial boy!), the ancient ones, the country ones etc etc. When I was in my late teens/early 20s the mumbles mile was in its pomp and oh boy was that a sight to behold

hmmmmm, not really.

I think the average Brit vastly overestimates how much of a fcuk other nations care about any vestigial remnants of the class system.

certainly wide eyed colonial boys anyhow.

Still don't know why Irish Pubs is a thing in Australia. Like we don't know how to drink piss. Irish in pubs inevitably involves a bunch of aggro drunken cnuts sitting at the beer pumps getting annoyed at every fcuking punter who tries to order a drink. Move along tossers.

The pub is largely egalitarian though. They don’t call it the watering hole for nothing. Such hierarchies as exists align more with surfing’s - who’s local, who has his own glass behind the bar with his name written on a strip of insulating tape, who has his own tankard, who can hold forth unchallenged from the floor on the miracle of brexit and the perfidious frog, who can pounce on the new fella give him a predictable nickname and bellow Oi oi, here’s Skippy! every time he walks in, who commands the pool table, the darts, who knows when and how often to say And one for yourself, sweetheart. Such a minefield
