A Moderator's Message

Post by Fuschia » Sat Dec 27, 2014 10:21 pm

Shortly I will be stepping down as a Moderator on Realsurf.

It's time. Maybe it's overdue.

There are a number of reasons for this move but basically it comes down to the fact that, as the only active moderator, I can't do the job effectively. There are far too many posts for one person to monitor, with the result that sometimes stuff gets through which probably shouldn't be there.

I recognise this is probably a subjective view but it's one formed over the last couple of years. I took on the role to support Marcus as some of the older members will recall. There was discussion about adding extra mods but not only did this not happen but Marcus quit after some pretty ordinary treatment of him and his brother. At the time (and still) I found the attitude to them disturbing, especially given that since then many members have disclosed their own battles with both drugs and mental health issues.

So I was left as the only active mod. Out of respect for what Don had achieved with the whole Realsurf site since the mid 90's and believing that the forums were an integral part of that whole thing, I stuck around and endeavoured to keep things “reasonable”. It's a big ask when you have a life and a family and including a number of trips away (including overseas) with little or no internet access.

At times, there were suggestions (serious ones) made that we should let the site “self manage”. That “peer pressure” would keep it under control. That was never going to happen. There have been plenty of examples where things have got out of control and despite comments from peers, the smart arses continued on their merry way.

Have I enjoyed the role? Most of the time, yes. But I suspect I would have enjoyed myself just as much had I simply stayed as a normal member. I HAVE enjoyed helping keep Don's dream alive. I HAVE enjoyed meeting many of you – most of whom have become friends I hope to keep. I HAVE enjoyed the numerous messages of support I've received over the last couple of years.

But there have been down times too. Times when I felt frustrated that things weren't really in my control. But maybe that's normal for a moderator.

I think the site is better now than it used to be. When I was working full time and just checking in occasionally, some of the on-line battles has to be seen to be believed. Even Larry commented recently that we were a soft bunch compared to the way things were. (My interpretation of his words). And a couple of times there have been references to the “new vanilla form of realsurf”. I felt that was a good thing even if some didn't.

One of the difficulties of moderating a web forum is that some people tend to say things in a much more vicious way than they would if face to face. And without the benefit of body language and facial expressions, it's not hard to form a wrong impression from the printed words alone. So a part of the mod's job is to try to head these issues off at the pass – not an easy job at the best of times. You have to try to read posters' minds and guess at their intentions. Again, difficult for just one mod.

So, having said all that and for any of you who might have actually persevered this far, I'd like to wish you all the best for the future. I'll still be a member and I've no doubt I'll still have my say if I think someone is out of line. In fact, without the threat of being called a dictator, I may even have more to say.

I'd also like to thank Don for providing the site and hope he will continue to do so. He is a genuinely nice guy and a true Realsurfer at heart.

Realsurf provides a useful means of communication between a group of (relatively) like-minded individuals who share a love of the surf and things surfing. It is effectively an on-line club where members can meet and share ideas, thoughts and issues. Whilst it sometimes gets a bit heated, in my opinion that's just a normal extension of real life and forms part of its attraction.

Long may it continue.

Cheers.

Trev

Trev. You've done good. Thanks for all your perserverence, patience, openness and good sense.

Aren't retiring moderators expected to celebrate by posting a dick photo?

I haven't been a forumer since computers ran on steam, like some members here, but you seem to me to have been a good even handed Mod Trev.

It took you this long?

Well done I guess Trev. I wouldn't moderate this bloodshop if you paid me $12759.

I'm certain that in times to come, in the far off future, surfers will regard these last few years of Realsurf under the wise and benevolent guiding hand of Tard G as the cultural equivalent to ancient Greece in the Age of Pericles. .

in the meantime we're just a bunch of retards prattling on about silly things...

Fire up the pozzible starter fund, and I'll moderate it for 10 grand per year.

TrevG, he was one of the good guys but in the end he jus' couldn't live with himself that Nick Carroll was shot on his watch. No way back for a moderator after that kinda shit. Good luck Trev, you're gonna feel naked for a while without that green suit of power, impotent even, and seeing the next guy swaggering around is gonna hurt, and hurt deep, but you jus' gotta suck it up, brother.

I can think of no better valediction than this: 3-)
