MR, simply a legend. A well-written article too.
The introduction to David Knox's 1992 biography of MR refers to an earlier cleanup wave in that same event that broke about 10 metres in front of MR. It rag-dolled him underwater for what seemed forever, so long that he thought he would die that day..... his leg rope doubled in length. Being the champ that he is he just kept on going. As they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

A nicely woven story Nick. Magoo has so many surf stories through all eras of board riding, but he's so humble it would take a skilled interviewer to get them all on the table. But what a story it would be....
Here's a recent award winning attempt by Dean Saffron. Dean put this together around this years Magoo Charity Classic...

we're all eagerly anticipating Fong's forthcoming contribution to this forum. who know what form it will take, maybe a short piece, some photographs, witty anecdotes, helpful information on boards etc.
hopefully anything other than getting his girlfriend to beg for help in saving their shithole hostel, hanging shit on 'the industry' or constantly criticising you and shearer in his illegible fashion.

That was sweet Nick.
Never met Magoo but Brocky has spoken highly of him and passed on a few of his life skills which sounded super abundant and highly effective.
Sounds like he is leaving, or has left, a good template to follow.
But there's a surplus of that around here: Brocky, Greenough, Mactavish and many nameless others.......not so much what they say as what they do. Taking all the human emotion out of it even, for whatever reason, and looking at it purely scientifically you can easily distill cause and effect.
Living like this produces this effect. Doing this causes that.
It's one of the main reasons to live around here, having that in close proximity, as lived reality.

Magoo's wife Debbie contacted me, said she was really hoping a lot of old mates and surfers in general would pop round to see him, give him a bit of warmth in his last days.
Anyone who knows him or such, PM me for her contact details.

I went around with a couple of mates a few weeks ago - we only expected to stay for an hour but Baz was in good form and the afternoon flew by. We dragged out stories of G-Land and Mike Boyum, talk of Peter Troy - he is still so buzzed on surfing and he's having a rich surfing life.Nick Carroll wrote:Magoo's wife Debbie contacted me, said she was really hoping a lot of old mates and surfers in general would pop round to see him, give him a bit of warmth in his last days.

If you know him - pop in - he's in good spirits!

There was a pic of him and John Sojoski on John's FB page a couple of weeks ago.
His is one of the names that just kept turning up over the years. I never met him but all the best to him.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.
