I'm sure they'd try it on though

how would someone get the key locked inside, without breaking in?

i asked mine about surflock use, they said they cover a key in a towel on the beach so my option was like fort knox.
reasonable attempt to secure the vehicle was what they look for.

but i don't leave an extra key inside

I use a key safe type of thing outside, for the non-electronic key storage, and a car safe for the electronic key ancd shit. Whoever posted on here way back, about safe key storage getting ground off and the entire rig, car, stolen in england, summed it up.

To be honest ... I can only visualise Fong behind the wheel of a mustard coloured Datsun 120Y. Its got one of those matching sunvisors over the windscreen and an old STP sticker on the back.
The moving finger writes and having writ moves on ... now all thy piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel even half a line ... nor all thy tears wash out a single word of it.
