What's a pushchair? A wheelchair?
Re: Roof boxes
Looked into them awhile ago,but decided on the lockable straps.
Thule looked the best quality, can pick a second hand one up on ebay for a decent price, can get one that will hold up to 7'2" I think.
Just google luggage pod

Re: Roof boxes
Okay, this is actually a question dear to my heart at the moment.
Thule and Yakima make the best roof pods.
I prefer Thule, but that's partly because it's been around a lot longer in Oz and are better with warranty claims. Plus I have some other Thule stuff that can all be keyed the same.
Yakima actually have better shapes and hinges, I think, though apparently they aren't as good in the snow because of the multiple locking points seizing up.
Both make a big deal about quick fitting. This isn't that big a deal, you probably won't use it often, the old U-bolt ones are easy to use. Allegedly the Thule locks onto the rack better.
Both companies have fitting guides and prices on their websites.
They are stupidly expensive.
Secondhand is a good place to pick them up, but check first to see if they'll fit on your car and your crossbars. Annoyingly both companies change the name of their models every couple of years but the numbering stays roughly the same. e.g. Thule 700s are always the same length, Yakima 12s ...
You can't put a lot of weight up top, will depend more on your crossbars than your pod. Many are limited to 50kgs but some go to 100.
Length of the pod and position of crossbars is more of an issue. We have an old Thule one that can hold up to a 7'4" but it won't fit on our car because it hangs over the back too much and hits the rear hatch. Currently looking for a cheap smaller one.
Hanging over the front of the roofline is a reasonably serious safety issue due to lift. Depending on what your car is this'll be a limiting factor in how big a pod you can get.
Your fuel economy will suck with one on, and you'll notice the wind.
Plus at some point you'll probably smash it on a tree branch or something low.

I saw a Range Rover Vogue (starts from $178k) with pink number plates on the weekend. I hate to stereotype but I think the most off road it has been is driving over a soccer field.alakaboo wrote:Just get a range rover, plenty of space

Loofy unless you think you'll use it a fair bit and have somewhere to store it, hiring a trailer or even a bigger car is often a better option.
Just make sure the trailer is allowed to go over 80 as most hire ones aren't, and check the bearings.

Soft edit.
Re: Roof boxes
There's a jaw bone of what I think is a Blue whale on a remote beach near here. I want it, but it would take 6 people to get it up the dune. I'd need a trailer and the cover of dark to get it home. Once there, I don't really have anywhere to put it. Then there's the potential legal consequence. All this and I still want italakaboo wrote:I did that with a whalebone.swvic wrote:I did that with a canoealakaboo wrote:Plus at some point you'll probably smash it on a tree branch or something low.

surely it can't be illegal to take a washed up whalebone home.
fuck this country's soft.
Re: Roof boxes
Is in vicco. Prob elsewhere too
There's also a dead orca on a beach west of here. People have been souveniring teeth. Some bureaucrat has been squawking about how not only is it illegal, it's also likely to be highly infectious and a real risk to human health

Killer whale carcass washed ashore near Portland
17 October 2013
"An adult male killer whale carcass has washed onto a rocky shore near Portland. It has visible signs of large shark bites.
People should be aware that approaching or interfering with the whale carcass is illegal and a risk to health and safety.
The carcass is a health risk, containing bacteria and potentially harmful pathogens. As it decomposes, it releases oil and fluids into the ocean which could attract very large sharks.
The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) strongly advises beach goers, swimmers and surfers to stay well clear of the area.
Under the Wildlife Act 1975, it is illegal to interfere with a whale, whether dead or alive and severe penalties apply. DEPI advises that several teeth have already been stolen.
The carcass is being collected on behalf of Museum Victoria. It is a priority for their collection."
