I've got a Balin 7 footer for anything with moderate grunt. Had heaps of Balins over the years and never had a dud

General rule: New board = new leggie, but I've not been strictly adhering to that in the last couple of years because I've broken a couple of near newies

so I was talking to some legrope sales rep coupla months back and he said most blokes who complain about broken or non-sticking leashes are treating them wrong. they leave them in the sun and drag the velcro through sand and then wonder why it stops sticking or snaps.

so he said you actually want the ones that stretch, the composition of the nylon is such that it will yield but won't snap as easy.
dunno which ones but he mentioned the ones he sells have some kind of core, rather than just solid plastic.

anyway, I have a creatures one that's fine. but another creatures leash that just twists up like a slinky despite the double ended swivel.

leashes suck balls and I hate wearing them.

I think all mine are O&E, but only because they were on sale at the time I needed to buy a handful.

I have some comp leashes I use when the waves are small, and some serious overkill big wave ones I use when the waves are above 3 foot. They have a different coloured bit in the middle. Noticeable difference in drag.

My legropes last for years. In addition to the things mentioned above:-

1) I hold onto my board whenever I can eg. I try to duckdive/eskimo roll under waves rather than bail.

2) I store the legrope loose in the board bag instead of stretched tight and rolled up around the board.

But the leash will eventually break: I just hope I'm close to shore and in small surf when it happens.

Same.

Mine are O&E. Seem to be pretty good.

My dakine has withstood some full on southern ocean sauce in tassie, still holding firm. It's only a comp leash too. The velcro is getting a bit suss, but the swivel and rope are excellent.

I have an O&E premium too, it's about 2 years old but hardly used -- it's thick and clumsy, I attached it to the beautiful and dashing DMS ... and so far so good.

but ... like Chrisb says, I always surf like I'm not wearing a leash. Never let my board go, no matter what. I'll flick off a wave and catch my board rather than squeeze another turn into the wave and lose it in the whitewater.

I've had a few leggies snap after taking then OS as a spare over the years. I've always thought the customs must have cut them to see if they were full of contraband substances. Anyone had a similar experience?

Fcuken legropes, use only when necessary.

O&E 6 and 7 footers here, DaKine gun leggies in Hawaii.

Keep em out of the sun, uncoiled.

O and E for me. Got 3 of varying sizes on different boards and no issues with any of em.

On the other hand, bought a couple of FCS ones on sale a couple of years back. Both of the fcukers lasted less than 6 months and both failed in the same place, where the cord attaches to the strap. No fin slices or anything involved and both failed in surf under 3ft. Pissweak junk!

C'mon, you seriously saying Macquarie bankers don't build good legropes.?? >><<
Those guys are hard core surfers who personally test every FCS product in the toughest conditions a millionaires factory can put them through.

Got a big-wave bodyboarding leash that defeated about 5 strings and pulled a plug out of a board.
Thing would have to be about 18 years old.
I retired it, one day I might have to restrain a shawk.
