Four Corners & Wavepool

Post by eel » Thu Mar 07, 2013 11:01 pm

This week on Four Corners was about dodgey investment company's fleecing old cnuts for their life savings. Anyway apparently one of the guilty investment company's is building a housing complex inland from the goldy with a few ghey sporting venues like a beach volleyball complex. But more importantly a Kelly Slater wave pool.

The unfortunate thing is its probably going to require some more silly fcukers to part with their cash before its up and running.

Anyway I did a bit of googling and apparently another entrepreneur has bought over the Spanish cnuts responsible for the Wavepool you see Fanning riding on tube. The plan is to build this one before the KS one.

I was at that conference. The article is full of shite.

Wavegarden already have a location in Australia, and it isn't the Gold Coast.
Their preso was very impressive. It's daylight second to the others.

Less said about the development the better.

I told youse about that fcuken guy and his ponzi scheme finance bs months ago.

In nov last year, his PR firm announced there was to be this big whiz bang press get together to showcase the plans for the wave pool among other things to do with the "development". The PR firm hyped it for weeks beforehand to the surf press. Kelly was gonna be there! Or one of his partners. Etc.

Then two days beforehand, they pulled the plug. Completely. The whole thing cancelled. Not postponed ...cancelled.

I've never heard of a press/PR thing being cancelled before except under the most dramatic circumstances, ie 11 Sept 2001 or something.

Fongy the average return on pooled super funds in Australia this fin year will be about 8.5%.Right now it's a better investment than paying down your mortgage. And a shit load better investment than a wave pool. I mean if that's the only partner KS's mates can come up with, you might as well go ride those Yamba river waves.

If you are too old for a wave pool and have plenty of money you can buy into Clive Palmer's "Titanic": $500k upwards for first class tickets.

Still, it would be nice to see it ..... ahem ......... float.

The development presentation actually made me feel queasy.
I've got the promo DVD if anyone is interested. A fairly surprising absence of any detail.
If I had to guess, and it is a reasonably well educated guess, the only reason for the inclusion of the KS (or should that be BS?) wavepool is so that they can sidestep some development restrictions through getting it declared a project of state significance.

Read my first post, Fong.

Wavepool on its own, fine. Unlikely to work financially, but fine.
Wavepool used to enable a larger housing development backed by shonks, not fine.

And also wave it around in front of potential investors.

I'm sure that they would blend in well with the compulsory dinner suits.

Alakaboo,
Whereabouts in Australia do Wavegarden plan to build a wavepool?
Nothing mentioned on their site.

They'll be having an announcement of some sorts in April. I won't steal their thunder, they asked us politely.

They said they had projects committed in 10 places, one of which was in Australia. And not Nerang.

This whole wavepool thing has the faint whiff of the 'monorail' about it.

for someone who comes across as so smart and cagey in interviews kelly slater sure does seem to have some dodgy mates and get involved in some harebrained schemes. could it have anything to do with growing up in florida, i wonder.

Well yeah, they need to sell 800 houses to make any money out of it. Bit hard considering that was the amount of houses sold in the whole of Gold Coast last year.

The whole episode is here http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/ ... 700673.htm

The company in question is discussed around the 23 minute mark.

In regards to Slater, he's a shocking whore like all high profile sportsmen willing to put his name to anything for the right price. I doubt he looks too deeply where the money comes from.

It is interesting isn't it? He is incredibly close with money but seems to have slender judgement around business partnerships. I suspect he just likes big ideas but doesn't really have the patience to examine them closely.

Dunno about the shocking whore thing, maybe eel knows Kelly a bit better than I do, he doesn't strike me as a shocking whore, given what he's done, it'd be kind of weird if he didn't have a fair bit of money coming in.

But yeah I spose he is a natural foot.
