If only it was that simple, I don't think fin boxes so would be strong enough to handle the side to side forces, I haven't had a disaster yet so I must be lucky or maybe know what I'm doing....maybe.

hi mate

you got nothing to lose trying ...

hopefully it would be a simpler build , once four [? or more ?] bases to fit the fin boxes , are made ?

and you could experiment with different length 'stems' ,

and maybe interchangeable 'foil' head parts ....

you certainly have the winged head bits available now

how many do you have , in total now , please , Brett ??

I'm thinking , making them out of wood and fibreglass [ ?lighter / easier to break ?.... rather than ? 'risking' breaking the finboxes , perhaps ?] , and having some kind of tight fitting groove , for the 'foil head' bit , would give the opprtunity for interchanging the foils' parts ??

cheers

ben

I have never broken a finbox . But then , mind you , I am yet to make any 'foils' of my own .....

I have about 100 foils that have survived the testing process over the past 10 years but not much else.
The winged heads are yet to be built if you're talking about the drawing of the vertical strut with 2 angled tips ?

I was thinking of the " 100 foils " that you have previously tested , actually ...

about how many of the 'winged tip bits' are still surviving , in one piece ?

cheers

Ben, Come on back to Sydney and you can rummage thru the Garage of Surfing Design !
The 'wing tip' idea is kinda new so there's only a few of them in existance but there's tonnes of the basic foils that led to the 'wing tip' idea.

Tried and tried again to get lateral foils to work, the problem is that they're the recognised orientation for hydrofoils, Ive never seen anyone even try a foil that wasn't laterally positioned. So of course they must work in the surf, but they don't, we'll not for me. Back to longitudinal foils and Ive compressed the 2 basics of lift and grip into a simple shape.
They're up side down in the pic.

Image

The flat area (blue) is the planing area of 60 sq in each side.

Image

But the new concept is to 2 separate areas of grip (red dots), kinda like a quad, the front section (left) has grip but more of a pivot shape, while the back fin area is all drive. It should give a longer , more stable hold to the wave overall but also be able to break away easier at the front area.
Because its made of Aluminium I will test it and if the fronts too 'grabby' I will reshape it down or add as required.
See what happens...

Got a Gath, never tried one before...

All good Capt, thanks for asking !
Hows your new life ? Ive seen a few pics of your shaping skills and you're doing a great job.
Foils are always in and out of the water, the design is easy to change but the theory of how and why it works isn't easy to refine. But certainly the longitudinal arrangement with left/right foils is the only way that suits surfing.
Often the best advancements are when I take a break for a month or two, then a new idea appears and then it's back to the shed to start building....
I'll have more to show this summer.

Things are great for me thanks mate! Thanks for the compliment on the shaping. That finless board actually rides pretty damn well! Only pity is the UV resin used isn't very strong and its dinging really easily.

Great to hear you're still experimenting with foils. I have flexibile working hours on mondays and thursdays now, so if you need test pilot I'm more than happy to pop round for a yarn and check some stuff out :)

I've been doing a few other projects, I 3-D printed a universal fin box that takes all FCS, Futures and FCS-II fins.
And now I'm starting to design an incorporated control system that fits inside the surfboard.
The universal fin box is now a file where anyone can download it and print them out.

Thats exciting! That could really take off too?!

I knew you'd still be in the laboratory.

How did that clear surfmat go?

The clear mat is a blast, you're flying 5 inches above the water, it's a real spin out ! You're welcome to give it a go.
I've updated to iOS 8 and now I can't post pics....
