I like watching Dane surf, but in contests he really is having his cake and eating it. Neither his vast salary nor his reputation is affected by competition results, and he doesn't have to worry about ranking points and their implications for his future as a pro surfer. In his position I'd imagine most surfers would be pushing the envelope on every turn.

good to see some debate. Reminds me of fine art - some people see something hanging on a wall and think "my 4 year old could do better than that." Others appreciate the skill and artistry and are entranced.

Fong-o, I suspect you are no fan of Jackson Pollock.

Ok lets say that turn was completed by another surfer other than 'Dane'. Lets say, Luke Stedman or someone like that . Would you all be pulling your pudds just as hard? Or is it the 'Dane' factor.

Which reminds me of recent visit to a local Quicksilver shop for some emergency wax. The too cool for school 'salesman' was telling a customer how 'sick' these new boardshorts were that had just come in. He called them 'Dane's new sick boardies'. These were not just any boardies, these were Dane's new sick ones. The 'Dane factor' is alive and well. A Quicksilver marketers dream.

Luke Stedman wouldn't have pulled that one off. Of course there's a degree of luck there, but it doesn't lessen the quality of the turn one bit.

hmmm, haters, as the kids say these days, are gonna hate.

there's certainly a lot of acrimony among RS members towards anything to do with professional surfing, surfwear and so on. I don't quite get it. I'd rather watch Dane tear the bag out of wave than some dude in a black wetsuit going straight on a fish because its "soulful."

Surfing's been commercialised. Get over it. And that commercialisation doesn't undercut one little bit a turn that basically no-one else could have made.

One thing I've noticed, as someone who has coveted diamond dobby, the price of boardshorts has come down by 20-30bucks.

Dane's surfing exceeds the hype.

thats a mighty rare thing in the modern world.

I got 2 pairs of Diamond Dobbys at half price from Quicky's melbourne mega mart. Still got rash

You can get Danes, Slaters and Andos. Sorry, Kelly, I went with the other 2 because they are so much cooler

Not really, my wife chose them

No, it can't be true! Dane could fly if he wanted to. Like a bird in the sky, I believe he can fly!

I would say Fongsssss, you should probably shut your pie hole because you clearly think the 'turn' was just a hack. it was a reverse under the lip, you can't see it in the video, he's engulfed in a wall of whitewash.

refer to the sequence above. if the sequence doesn't make sense to you, you need to shut up

All well and good, but Quicksilver didn't choose his name off an electoral roll. He got his position from the fact that he does things people like to see, often to the detriment of his completing a wave or getting a score, which to most people trying to pretend they don't care about competitive surfing (hey Fong!) probably adds to the value.

i heard he also cracked open a can red bull and drank it before clearing the white water....wateva

If its the turn of the centry....why the crap score
Fong, you can't have it both ways. You don't like competitive surfing, the asp, surfwear ... you've made your thoughts abundantly clear, I don't need to go on. It's therefore completely disingenuous to base your diss of Dane's wave on the VERY THING you've taken such a long-winded, emoticon-ridden stance against: a score in a professional surf contest.

As an earlier poster noted: look at the stills. Look REAL hard. And then come back to us.

It doesn't work both ways Fong. There are many instances of the judges not getting things right, instances which closer followers of the ASP could enlighten you on.

I think you're just trying to weasel out the corner you've backed yourself into. Sometimes it's OK to be wrong.

Have fun going straight. Trim is under-rated, according to an old friend of mine. Do you have a beaver-tail?

So you agree, it should have been scored higher?

Pick a side.

So Fong, was it
a)a shit move, overscored
b) a shit move, underscored
c) a great move, overscored
d) a great move, underscored
e) a shit move, perfectly scored
f) a great move, perfectly scored
g) my brain hurts
h) I like fish

You can only pick one.
