Cleaning an epoxy surfboard
What substance can I use to clean up the surface of an epoxy surfboard that won't damage it?
I've read that wax sometimes slips off epoxy boards in spots where it's not totally clean. While I've rubbed off the previous wax with a clean cloth, there could be some residual stuff still on it that may be the reason why the wax keeps falling off.
So what can I use on this thing?
Jimmy, Acid is not the correct answer...

Mineral turps works great.
Just soak a bit into a paper towel and rub through.
Epoxy or polyester, both are fine.
Make sure you rub fully clean with a dry towel before trying another wax layer.

I routinely Dewax epoxy boards. "Wax sometimes falls off..." Wtf?
Anyway - I wouldn't use petrol. If you have a filler coat spray you could make a filthy rotten mess of it. And depending on your construction type, say its fibre flex style, just glass on foam, you might be pushing freakin' petrol into the EPS through pinholes in the glass job. Oooooh.
Prep sol is the best. Supermarket citrus cleaner is great, then a green plastic scourer, cream Jiff and dish washing liquid. Boiling waters a fucked idea.

Next time you are at the beach scrape as much wax off as you can then leave the board face up in the sun so the remaining wax warms. Then take dry sand (make sure it is completely dry) and rub it over the remaning warmed wax. Wax will wipe off. No damage. Also works with foam dust if you happen to be near a surfboard factory.

Why would it be a gee up d*ck head?alakaboo wrote:This is a gee-up, isn't it?
It's a simple question.
I don't want to damage the board. I can obviously dewax it but I want it super clean so the wax sticks to it because epoxy is notorious for not being a good surface for wax to stick to and I've heard that it can be because it's not thoroughly clean.
If you listen you might even learn somthing.
Re: Cleaning an epoxy surfboard
You should start a thread about that, maybe people have some ideas about how to get wax to stick to your board?bumfluff wrote: epoxy is notorious for not being a good surface for wax to stick to and I've heard that it can be because it's not thoroughly clean.

I'd say sun is a bad idea if you have any dark-coloured decals... they just love to heat up to about three hundred degrees and delaminate. I'd also agree with josh that petrol + eps = big, gloopy disaster.
Sounds sad but good ol' hot soapy water and paper towell or dunny paper is all I use. Those $2 window washer squeegies will get most of the old wax off after you've poured boiling water all over it. If you're finicky that Export Degreaser aerosol spray you can buy for $1 will get the rest off, and doesn't seem to dissolve EPS ( but test it on your wide-screen LCD packing foam just to make sure ).

This isn't about making wax stick, it's about cleaning an epoxy board. I know what wax to use to make it stick but prefer a softer wax that might not be sticking due to the board being dirty.alakaboo wrote:You should start a thread about that, maybe people have some ideas about how to get wax to stick to your board?bumfluff wrote: epoxy is notorious for not being a good surface for wax to stick to and I've heard that it can be because it's not thoroughly clean.
Again, open your ears and stop talking, then you might be on the same page as the rest of us.
Re: Cleaning an epoxy surfboard
So you just want it clean, you don't want wax to stick to it ever again?

If JD told me boiling water on my surfboard was a bad idea, I wouldn't put boiling water on my surfboarddUg wrote:Those $2 window washer squeegies will get most of the old wax off after you've poured boiling water all over it
Unless I've incorrectly been substituting **** with a negative and it's meant to be a positive. Maybe I'll put some boiling water on my newest board and see what happensspeedneedle wrote:Prep sol is the best.
