Teahupoo 2012

Post by Lucky Al » Wed Aug 15, 2012 4:03 pm

Anyone else going to stay up and watch a few heats? Fong? I know you love this stuff. My money's on Gabriel Medina, John John Florence, Owen Wright and Josh Kerr into the semis. That may be a mathematical impossibility and I have no idea what will happen afterwards but I don't give a shit. Here's hoping a megadeath swell pops up out of nowhere for the final day.

Yeah except I am gonna avoid that booth as if it were full of the Plague.

Actually that's probably the only way you could win an award for commentary -- by not doing it.

Will they even have any surf to run the event??

Long range EC is showing something surfable brewing to the SE of NZ, but this is a LONG way out.

Tomorrow (sydney time) if there is any swell. Could be a lot of lay days this year.

Lay Day's is an understatement!!!! There could be the whole comp of nothing over 3-4ft+!!!!

They better pray to Huey those long range EC charts come to fruition, otherwise they are fecked!!! It's also going to be cutting it fine with respect to the end of the waiting period, even if this EC swell does come to fruition.

Yeah, the prime NZ swell window looks pretty fcuked till that system flares up around the 21/22.

It does get some wrap from swell in the southern Ocean and some bizarre little SE swell from those anomalous pinched/cut-off lows in the central Pac.

Nobody's gonna be waiting till the end of the period at this event.

I can feel the strain on it from Auckland airport.

Nothing of note except for some medium sized S/SW swell during the second half of the waiting period with a bigger S/SW swell possibly showing on the last day as the Long Wave Trough amplifies east of New Zealand.

Won't even bother watching the first half of the competition window.

Well Teahupoo is a more complex and interesting setup than you'd think from most of the photos, it can be really good at 4'-5' and I bet there's a few exceptional heats in this event.

I don't reckon it will be one of those totally dead years where the event has to wait till the last day and run in 2' slop.

Just that there won't be any point in waiting, there'll be OK waves for five or six days and that'll be enough.

Fair enough Nick. Thanks for the clarification. But surely that's what waiting periods are for. If there's a swell looming for the last day or so, why not put the best surfers in the world in the finals on these days?

last night i dreamt that julian wilson landed on the reef on his face after attempting something nuts on the end section and being horribly disfigured went into hiding for years until finally a kid wrote him a letter from the other side of the world and persuaded him to give it another shot and to give back to surfing so back he went onto the tour and just blitzed every event until bang world champion just like that all while wearing a balaclava which he never ever took off except in the bathroom on his own at night.

it's not going to be macking: pro surfing is dead! i bet the judges even make some mistakes, i mean howlers. and the commentary will be horrible and the post-heat interviews boring. shitty webcast and everything. pro surfing, i don't know why i bother sometimes. it's not as if i don't have better things to do between midnight and dawn. guess that makes me a martyr.
