Ding fixing

Post by steve shearer » Tue Aug 07, 2012 10:10 am

Sucks dogs balls.

Tried to repair some severely battered surfboards in anticipation of this upcoming swell and made the biggest dogs breakfast out of it.

Good ding fixers are worth their weight in gold.

That is all.

Tried to do a nose and tail reconstruction and patch a board trashed on the rocks in big swell.
More ding than board.

What a mess. I fcuking hate resin.

If it isn't huge, I find the suncure poly stuff in,the tube excellent, as long as its not a huge ding. Its the ducks nuts for small rail dings. I spread some on thr rail, add clear tape to keep the rail shape, then into the sun to kick. Most of the time I just leave the tape there. But you are right, fixing dings is borderline craftsmanship. I'd rather glass a whole board than fix most dings, and im not the greatest glasser haha

I'll happily patch most dings myself these days. Had enough practice and I've got a pretty good setup in the garage with a board stand my dad made for me now.

But if we're talking busted noses or tails or massive chops then I'll take it to the experts.

agree - it sucks

Snapped a fin out on the weekend. Both fcs plugs cracked in half and put a long tear through the glass around the fins. Once i drilled out one plug i came to the realisation that my skills and equipment would make a mess of trying to re-set new plugs and fin. I handed back the 2 new plugs i had cajoled from the local shaper and gave him the board to fix. Some things are best left to the experts.

Now have the expense of the ding fix and a new fin. That sucks too.

Fixing dings is easy and most people could do it with a little research into how. Check utube for heaps of help vids on just about any repair known to surfers.
When it gets to this level of self important stupidity I lose interest.

Gee, Steve, I wouldn't bother fixing them as you may incur more with some hairy rock jumps this coming weekend!!!!

Thats why I'm fixing Don.

Trying to get a quiver operational for the weekend.

and Spork the embarassing ting is I watched an hour of those vids and went in full of confidence.

The nose and tail reco is a total debacle.

The board with multiple rock gouges is semi-watertight.

I haven't touched the one with ripped out fin plugs.......that can wait for the Pro.

plugs are somethiung else.

One recent eye-opener was that you can't just dunk the fibre into resin, it fell apart!

Mate, the before and after of my dear wifes face when she gets back from England and see the unholy mess I've created would be worth the price of admission.

Minor repairs are ok , but , yup , a lot of things are best left to the experts .

If it's anything major , by the time you've bought what you need it's almost the cost of a proper ding repair . Add in wasted time , impatience , frustration , spills , sticky fingers , itch (and then having to go through the motions of cleaning the mess in front of the wife when you KNOW it's not going to come out !! ) , well it's just not for me . Dont have the time .

I dropped the ding fix business idea this time last year when I got a regular day job. Now the job's not so regular, thinking I might fire up the campaign.
Doing a repair recently for a fine fellow rs'r, and, as is always the case, being out on the street, neighbours come out of the woodwork with boards needing repairs. Just for a few beers though.
I quite enjoy the satisfaction of a good job done.

It's an art Shep.
Best be leaving it to artistes. Where's Bylsey?

Important things for fixing dings
Gloves (surgical)..saves hours of cleaning hands
Acetone....saves hours of cleaning hands and equipment
Wide tape for molds(use q cell for deep dings(keeps it light)) ..if not layer up with cloth.
Good sandpaper

It’s easy as piss. Do it in stages.

p.s that solar resin stuff sucks dogs balls

Usually do them myself but they do come out prettier with a pro.
Qcell definitely. I have used that solar stuff with a lot of success on chipped noses and tails. Less effective on punctures but okay.
Repaired a major fin chop in a tuflite with some of that bog plus UV Epoxy Resin and glass matting. This worked okay and is apparently what most shops charge you big time to do. A bit rough but its surfable again. Depends on how new the board is. Got my last puncture fixed professionally cause it was way deep.

Of course, Steve, the real solution to your ongoing problem is to be a heretic and go epoxy, mate. Lennox eats boards and thats what they are designed for. :D

that'd be reason to not go epoxy wouldn't it?/

The fact that epoxy is so much harder to repair......
