There's a few novelty waves in the area Beery, and some insane ones out on the Reef.

Steve, define "novelty". Does that mean like the sydney opera house wave?. Don't care if its small, just as long as I can get a surf in once a week.

Beerfan, Fong's pretty much on the money.
It's not a surfing town, there are rideable waves just south (rarely more than 2 foot, mostly 1 or less). There are very slightly better waves a bit further north, decent shaped but small waves a bit further south, or options elsewhere if you have access to a 4wd and a decent size boat.

Flat pretty much all winter, no sth swells. Cyclones are your best friend.

If you want more info, send me a PM.

I've surfed heaps around Yeppoon, but that's a ways away from the Stone.

Closest access to some of the best waves in Oz with a boat.

Don't forget to take into account astronomical rents, or that surfing, or entering the water, within cooee and another 20 miles of the harbour will probably see you ingest large amounts of toxic substances.

While mining is earning billions for the mostly foreign shareholders, it is changing places like Gladstone, and rarely for the better.

But Gina will be richer, so we can all be that much more aspirational.

Good luck if you go beerfan. At least you'll still have your love of beer, and perhaps more time to perfect that home brew.

Guessing/assuming you mean that Gladstone is, rather than Yeppoon, Steve.

What Oldman said too.
I wouldn't be drinking groundwater or eating fish from the harbour. I'm hearing some shocking things, from people who should know.

And just quietly, Gladstone was a bit of a shithole before it got filled with cashed up mining bogans.
I've got nothing against Taree.

Saw some great little peelers at Port Douglas.
Pity they were microscopic and the crocs, sharks and stingers ruled the break.

Ok guys thanks. Not really serious yet, and might not need to be. Was just thinking ahead. Im a fitter by trade, and at the moment im on good coin, but in the next few years i may end up without this job. I could stay local, and take a 40% pay cut, or move north ( or west ) and get a 40%+ pay rise. First choice is to stay here, but if need be, i might look at helping gina build a nest egg :D .

If it's a choice between the Stone and the Pilbara it'd depend on whether it was fifo.

The Stone is a shithole of monumental proportions but you will keep surfing.

Based in Geraldton, FIFO to the Pilbara would be a pretty good deal.

Beerfan,
I moved for work when I was young (~20) from Sunny Coast to Cairns for work. It was a great leason learnt at a young age as I will NEVER again sacrifice surfing and the whole beach lifestyle, for money and a job!!
Life's way to short for that.
I was lucky as meet a diehard surfer with a boat that was keen most weeks to hit the outer reef. Still, I only lasted a year there.
I hope it works out for you to be able to stay put.

I would definately prefer to stay here, im not looking to buy 3 houses or anything. Moving would be a last resort, but if I have to, may as well make it worthwhile, money wise and surf wise.
