German 'free diver' has apparently entered the Guinness World Records by holding his breath under water for more than 20 minutes
10 seconds and I'm scratching for the surface, starting to get desperate. Can do 2 minutes sitting at a table though (well I could last time I tried)
How much is it mind over matter - I mean why, after a hold down, can't a surfer just relax and lazily pop up after 20 seconds or so?

Obviously the situations are markedly different:
Getting ragdolled after a wipeout after a hard paddle
vs
Sitting at a kitchen table
vs
Semi-concious trance state in a tank
But do they justify a difference of
10 sec
vs
22min
That's 130 x as long!
Guess the interesting thing is what he could do in a hold-down which leads to the question, what could us mere mortals do in a hold down given his training/mind control/tricks etc

Reckon it is a lot to do with mind state. I did swimming and breath holding exercises before I went to Indo. 1st go down and I thought I was going to die. If you're mind is strong, that's where the benefit lies. Don't think mine is
How about the guy at Cloudbreak last year? 2 wave hold down. Can't remember who it was, but pretty sure it was one of those heavy duty Hawaiian watermen

A lot of old time big wave riders used to practice with rocks if the old surf movies are anything to go by.

It was Dave Wassel who got the 2 wave hold down.

A surfer who is also an anaesthetist told me he tested himself with an oximeter.
At one minute of breath holding he felt like his lungs were bursting: but the oxygen saturation in his blood was still 95%.
I guess CO2 accumulation makes you want to breathe. But you are safe.
So yeah, its about relaxing and going with it. A one minute holddown is pretty rare in Sydney beachies.

Aaron, aside from misspelling 'because', I fear you're becoming a bit too lucid.
Please desist.

I'm guessing a catholic reference to "body of Christ" maybe. Again, pretty funny.
