NC, why is Slater up against the lowest ranked qualifier in Rd 2? Aren't seeds now determined by current rankings, not last years?
Slater's the top seed in round two.

The commentary is a vexed question but I enjoyed Wassel in the box.

He was enthusiastic with only a slight tendency to drift into bombast and hyperbole.

I find the constant droning/fill the dead air of the semi-pro anchors the most annoying.

They could listen to ABC Grandstands coverage of the Rubgy League for a template in doing it right.

Last night i dreamed i was King Kong in Fiji.
I inserted a huge branch covered in commercial quantities of honey into the judges tower and pulled out all the commentators/judges and ate them....then i went onto Tavarua and rolled from one side to the other pancaking everybody in my path.

Once again i couldn't complete my dream due to a nocturnal emission .

God..i hate surfing competitions....soooooo boring.

I don't mind watching the highlights once a comp is over, however normaly a quick update in the sports section of the 6 O Clock news is enough, just to see who is who in the zoo. But to sit there and watch entire heat after heat. I would fall asleep. I'd rather go surfing, or stick pins in my japs eye. And as for surf commentary...it's fkrkn punishing. There are only so many times you can use words such as sick, frothing, stocked and blowing up to describe something surf related.

Don't forget "he's no slouch", most overused sentence in surf commentary history!

Where are the damn heat replays? How do they expect us working people to show any interest if we can't watch highlights, heat recaps etc?

Slater's the top seed in round two.
On the 2012 rankings he aint - both Josh Kerr and Taj are ahead of Slater. So I (sadly) checked the rule book. The way the rankings work is they carry over 2011 points for the first 5 events of the tour. Since this is event 4 they carry over 40% of their 2011 ranking. Presumably Slater's 40% of 2011 plus 2012 points was more than Taj's and Kerr's. Double sadly I checked, and they do;

"8.03 The men’s World Title Surfers will receive the ranking points they finished
with in 2011 as their base seed points for 2012.
...
Article 9: Seeding Order
9.01 For the first 5 Men’s World Title Events of 2012, Surfers will have 20% of
the points they received as described in 8.03 deducted per Event so that
by the 6th Event, the Surfers will be seeded solely by the points they
earned in 2012 World Title Events."

yes, that's why Slater was the top seed in round two.

for god's sake buzzy don't damage yourself by looking at that book.

Natho, I'm with ya, I'm with ya, except..........................

A surf contest is absolutely the perfect thing to be doing while you are at work.

Internet on, webcast on, earphones in ..........................

Email open, spreadsheets doing their thing, database working, waves coming - oh quick to the webcast, wave done, back to the spreadsheets.

It's farking made for work, but I agree with ya, I could rarely sit down and watch it if I wasn't already stuck at my desk.

The Eddia Aikau from a few years ago, including Nick Carroll doing some commentary IIRC, was one of the best days I have had at work.

Seriously.

The competitive surfing world has convinced us that it is completely ok to blend subjectivity with objectivity.
I would love a NASA scientist to explain to me the difference between a 14.3 and 14.2 score.
Sponsors please note ...watching the highlights surfing competition is better than doing spreadsheets or lying in the gutter, face down, on a rainy day.

ASP world tour commentary is a laughing stock. I actually think it would drive people away from surfing. i like this.

Joel Turpel is soooo bad it's painful. Californian surfer 'dudes' can eat shit, it's not the 90s.

Shane Dorian guest-calling at Pipe last year was definitely the best I can remember.

Jake Paterson is ok sometimes, although he is a loose cannon and clearly hates Brazilians.

Occy is just priceless. No shitty catchphrases and constant shout-outs to his lady.

The commentary pretty much sums up everything wrong with the ASP World Tour. Too many peanuts willing to render a broadcast unwatchable all so they can get some free accomo and a block of wax or a tailpad.

listen to this ASP, fans think your commentary sucks. fix it.
