surf betting
Hey there gang, just wondering if anybody here has ever gambled on professional surfing
Been researching an article -- finding it very hard to get much out of the actual agencies -- so thought Id start some polling of my own.

Re: surf betting
you can gamble on surfing?
Nick, to add to your highly scientific sample, I asked about 10 people about it last year, from keen sports punters to photogs to surfrider people, and none of them even knew it was possible.
Some of them (punters rather than surfers) seemed keen to get into it, they reckoned it'd be easy to pick winners in most heats but you'd have to put in some big money to win much.

The betting agencies seem to take bets on just about anything... I'd imagine it depends on the number of people wanting to bet? (I don't know a thing about betting. always preferred to spend my pin money on other things)

Re: surf betting
Pretty good odds available but given the amount of surfers in a comp, they'd have to be, be almost smarter odds to lay against someone not winning.
All the major online players, including the various state Totaliser (TAB) cover it.

Yeah won some money on Jody Smith winnig J Bay a couple of years ago (6/1 I think) and head to head heats. The books I have seen dont make it very complex gambling, just odds who will win, would be a ton better if they had odds on a) first 10 point ride b) who would make the quarters, semis, final c) how far will Kelly make it (in fact with such a strong favourite it would make great odds betting with him d) how far will the wild cards make it etc.... e) other e.g. multis
If it gets popular the betting choices will grow.
If your really interested maybe find out who is setting the odds for Colin Tidy at Bet Choice, they look like they know their stuff in the heat match ups and those guys love talking odds and why they ae setting the market as such.Link below and go to Surfing in the left hand column

Like Alakaboo, I didn't know you could. I'm not a gambling type, so I wouldn't anyway.

Re: surf betting
Well, chronic gambling and I go back a fair way,
Most of my close friends are gamble-a-holics, but not necessarily surfers.
There just doesn't seem to be enough cross over. The types of people who are surfers are often enough the type of people who aren't interested in betting, and vice versa.
The lack of interest of those who are part of the sport prevents it from really taking off as a money spinner for the bookies.
But sure, you can get on, and no I don't. Couldn't be bothered.

Re: surf betting
The oddsmakers will find it very hard to price up surfing accurately - huge variables in the sport. So they will mainly offer poor odds and make their money on the overround (offer 1.9 return on tossing a coin and calling heads).
So it will be hard to make money as a punter and not that easy to follow compared to a well publicised footy match running at set time each week for example.
Would be a bias towards sponsored surfers winning heats over nobodies - but that would be in the odds anyway.
Will stay marginal for sportsbooks and, as usual, lossmaking for most punters. A sharp punter who followed the tour with a lap top might make money reading the event / surfers trends but if you do well, sportsbooks ban you or limit your bet size (except for the Tote - but they offer poor odds usually).
Vezzy hard vey to make goot money!

Chuck 10 on Slater to win an event sometimes for fun, mostly don't care about good odds or not.

Doublespeak for Nick has already made up his mind to support whatever brings in the most money for the cartel, but wants to find out what the arguments are against his position so that he can counter them and pose as an objective journalist.Nick Carroll wrote:Hey there gang, just wondering if anybody here has ever gambled on professional surfing
