First time i've seen that footage, first glance says clean and offshore but look at how long the white water hangs around for, and there is no real back to the wave - it just keeps pushing. That aint behaving like a normal wave. Nice 'thought experiment' but i reckon If you went under one of those you wouldn't come up.

Nature wins. I pity the poor bastards who were washed away, and those who lost everything and everyone. How the fuck are they going to clean up some of these place? There are boats on buildings for godsake.

mr IQ , next time we are talking about paddling into tsunamis, remember that paddling out to wait for a tsunami has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Wow.

I think that's pretty gutsy going out with torches and waiting for a tsunami.

Maybe we could do an instant coffee style fund drive. Send you over to wait for the next one.

Probably won't need torches. Glow in the dark.

this website tracks most ships at sea.
this link (i am told by a friend that is a shipping enthusiast) tracks the last moments of the Asia Symphony before it was hit by the tsunami and washed ashore.

on a tangent
just been having a look at that website my old neighbour sent, its interesting to look at the line of coal ships off Newcastle, or the working boats on Sydney harbour, Panama canal and English channel.
I thought there would have been more show up off Indonesia. i couldn't find one ship in the Mentawais
