Terrible, terrible, aweful news!

Very sad and a HUGE loss for his family and surfing. Isn't his wife pregnant??? I'm shocked.

My thoughts are with his family.

Haysus!

That's just shocked me to the core, as has so much that has been happening this week.

That is just weird, unfathomable, all those things.

Best to family.

Risking it all in huge waves and finishing up like Mark Foo and others? Yes.
To be struck down by a disease? No - very hard to fathom.

It puts a damper on yesterday's happiness following Stephanie Gilmore's world crown victory.

Three-time surfing world champion Andy Irons has died on his way back home from an ASP surfing event in Puerto Rico.

The Association of Surfing Professionals confirmed the 32-year-old's death.

"He had reportedly been battling with dengue fever, a viral disease," the ASP said in a statement.

Advertisement: Story continues below Irons leaves behind his heavily pregnant wife Lyndie Dupuis.

"At this time the family thanks his friends and fans for their support and asks that the community respect its privacy," the ASP said.

Irons missed his heats at the Rip Curl Pro event in Puerto Rico due to illness over the weekend.

He was on his way home to Hawaii when he died.

Billabong spokesman Andrew Flitton told Australia's Surfing Life that Irons first flew from Puerto Rico to Miami, where he spent two days on an IV drip.

He then insisted on heading home to see his own doctor, but became sick and missed a connecting flight to Hawaii from Dallas, Texas, Australia's Surfing Life reported.

He checked into a Dallas hotel to rest. Hotel staff found Irons dead the next morning.

Irons clinched 19 world tour victories and was crowned world champion three times, in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

His most recent tour victory was in September, when he clinched victory in the Billabong Pro in Tahiti.

He withdrew from the ASP tour in 2009 citing personal reasons, but was granted a wildcard for the 2010 tour

Irons married Dupuis in 2007.

Both Tahiti and Puerto Rico would have the conditions that allow mosquitoes to spread dengue fever.
However, based on Dae's attached article death is a rare outcome.

AI's death is like Steve Irwin's in that they both survived the big risks only to be finished off by unexpected and relatively innocuous things. Life and death is unpredictable.
