Re: Ask Carroll
well it strikes me that just shows what a tough game national politics is.
it's a piece of cake to stand outside that tent yelling the Truth As You See It, it's completely another thing to go into the tent with all the animals.
In person Peter is still the courteous, intelligent and seemingly forceful character he appeared to be in his Oils days, I think he must have met his match and more in Canberra.

Chewed up by the Party Machine.....and spat out. Should have stayed Green. He was never one for nuanced political manouvres.

Re: Ask Carroll
yeh my old neighbour used to run Greenpeace for a while and was disappointed for him, I think a lot of people had hoped he'd make positive change rather than be a populist Rudd/Gillard puppet, but if you watched the Killing Season, Paul Keating would have had trouble operating in that cluster f@ck.

Can you imagine the corrupt wolfpit you enter. Good intentions are absolutely not welcome I would imagine.

Can you relate to this.

I think he was accepted as a potential vote winner who could be manipulated. Both sides do it. Angry Anderson anyone?

Re: Ask Carroll
I'm told (by people who work with them) that there are three kinds of politicians
- stupid
- stupid and mean
- intelligent and mean
The fourth, intelligent and compassionate, rarely last, although there is the odd one that does. Generally they either sit on the back benches and meander around in ineffectiveness, become independents (and generally ineffective unless they hold the balance or power) or just leave politics having discovered their ineffectiveness. You need to be mean to succeed, basically. Its not a co operative place where everyone is working towards the same ends, even within a party.
There aren't any stupid and compassionate ones, because they never get elected (well, maybe a few senators cough greens cough).
However, don't assume that the stupid and mean ones aren't successful, they can be very successful (and at times make it to be ministers). Having a fixed world view that fails to take into account reality and ignoring any opposing facts, and being mean at the same time, is a great way to succeed.
Being just stupid is useful because you are a vote for someone else in the party room but will never challenge. Its the same as hiring staff who will never be better than you, because it makes you look good.

The line is out of a Kendrick Lamar song.
I will rephrase it for you Nick, Would you prefer to be broke rather than brownnose, crawl suck cock etc and be rich?
Can you relate to this line or anyone you know?
